Walk to work (two hours) worth it? (lose weight and exercise)

It would be good to know what the actual distance is as well as the length of time it takes. My daily walk to work is 2 miles and i cover it in 30 mins. I find it wakes me up before i start work and feel better for it through the day than just getting in a car and arriving.

I walk to work, Leeds center from far west headenly 3 days a week, and yes, i feel much better for it, lost a bit of weight and gone down a size in tshirts :)

Its only about 4.5 miles, 1st time i did it, took me 80-90mins and i stopped 3 times to catch my breath, now, 6 months on, i do it in 40mins and i find myself going round the block a bit to get more walking done.

It will help, it will be hard at 1st, it will make you tired, welcome to exercise :)

Anything you can do to get your body moving is good, and nothing more natural than walking. take it easy, if you cant whistle while walking, your going to fast. use a walkman, they are great when walking, takes your mind of what your doing. Only works though if you cut out some of the rubbish your eating though...

Good luck and keep going at it.

Why not take the bus, and jog from one end of the bus to the other? Perfect balance between time and exercise.

Cycle, and walk the bike up the hills till you get fit.

Cycling is a good medium between walking and running. Walking alone won't be that beneficial - although better than no exercise. You need to get the blood pumping.

Surely thats relative? as unless you increase the distance you are in effect excersising for a far shorter period while cycling

EDIT: Ok might do a 40min walk instead to start off. Thing is would a 10min jog be more beneficial?

Thanks

yes much more

either way id cycle, 40minutes is a lot of time and running will leave you all sweating and stuff, thats hardly how you should arrive at work, unless your work is bad ass and you have locker rooms and showers etc

Pluss cyclings not as bad on the old knees

Spurred on by whoever started the "how to lose my beer belly thread"

I thought what about doing some exercise....and how can i go about doing some. I don't want to buy a bike, and also the hills near my house are pretty steep, the idea of attempting to cycle up one isn't one i welcome.

So i thought...hmm walk to work.

Walk-it say it'll take roughly 40mins (edited out:two hours).

Was wondering if the earlier wake up would actually be worth it in terms of exercise and losing weight?

Leave it till the way home, get the bus back to about 2 miles from home then walk. Do it every day.

Yes a 10 minute jog would be better...

Ideally you want to get the heart rate up and breathing heavier - but don't over do it, warm up into it, jog/run until your just about out of breath then walk out of it so you don't get cramps, etc.

I dunno why people go mad pushing themselves once they are out of breath and heart is beating faster as it doesn't make any difference in the long run to your fitness level and just does extra damage to your body. Regular shorter periods of exercise are better for you.

I think the advice given earlier in the thread is good if your going to walk - get the bus most of the way and walk the rest - 15-30minutes of walking is a lot better for you than not doing it.

As suggested above, I'd take the bus part way and walk the rest. Any physical exercise is better than nothing.

When I was working in central London I spent used commute on the Tube. Then a colleague encouraged me to try the bike. I found a good route through the parks and having a decent shower in the office meant I could always start the day feeling fresh. The best part was - biking and a shower was quicker than walking to the station and taking the Tube!

Definitely improved my fitness levels. I rarely got sick that year too. It's a shame I can't do the same here now...

Cycle.

I started cycling to college, 11 miles there, took about 40mins, then 11-15miles back home, then I got into it and really enjoyed it and even got into cycling, I lost like 2 stone and am now doing around 200+ miles a week and getting in 100+ miles in a day :D

If it's a brisk walk, (60%+ of your MHR) then it'll be worth it, but generally speaking, just trundling alone for x amount of miles won't do jack to increase your fitness.

If you can jog, i'd go for that. WAY more effective.
