Walkie Talkies - advice?

I am considering getting a couple of walkie talkies for my elderly parents. Do you need a license or anything? They are really cheap nowadays. £30 or so!

Also, are they powerful enough to go through thick walls of a house?

Don't need a licence and even the cheapest of products should be alright range wise in a house.

I had some of these for when I used to go airsofting, decent range, easy to use and cheap!

Many years ago when I was a wee lad, my friends had 2 walkie talkies, we were out in some fields or something, and we found that other people were talking on the same channel, it was a girl and her mum. Cue the relentless swearing and 'MCing' down the walkie talkie. The woman was like 'DO YOU KNOW IT IS AN OFFENCE TO SWEAR OVER THE AIRWAVES' we were laughing our butts off.
