I've recently started a new job that will involve a lot of walking (on paved footways).

I'm looking to get a set of suitable walking shoes/boots that will be comfortable and hold up to all kinds of weather.

My work will pay up to £60/65 (will need to double check the correct amount) but I would be prepared to pay a bit more on top if it's worth doing so.

What do people recommend?

Go to an outdoor shop and try some on. Find the ones that fit and ask the shop assistant for recommendations, they are usually knowledgeable in those kind of shops. (Millets, Blacks will be in your budget, or Cotswold/ Ellis Brigham if you want to get better, more expensive boots).

That said if it's just all paved then probably getting a pair of boots designed for security work may be a better bet.

Everyone will find something different works for them. £60 really is about the minimum for something durable if you spend a lot of time on your feet - £80-100 on a quality brand can be a big improvement on the experience. Amblers steel is one of the few cheaper brands that I've found to last awhile (a lot of the generic brands won't last long if you actually spend hours a day in them) though personally I'm a big Merrell fan.

Lots of brands are good, it's all about what fits you. I'd generally prioritise 1) fit, 2) grip, 3) weight, 4) breathable, 5) waterproof. Waterproofing might be useful in some cases, but it's never that great and it doesn't last forever so you'll run into trouble sooner or later if you rely on it anyway.

As above, ever since I first tried Merrell's I've never been without a pair. Wonderfully comfortable.

These days they do styles that aren't as obviously trekking shoes too, so maybe more suitable for work.

I've worn Merrells everyday for about 8 years and only on my 3rd pair, not bad considering I weigh 23 stone!

So comfortable.

and I gave a pair of their sandals for the summer.

Had some Brasher GTX Gortex walking boots lasted about 6 years, starting to wear now and getting uncomfortable.

Need replacing but dont think Brasher is original company now?

As you're going to be walking on hard surfaces all day, I'd look for footware that caters specifically for this rather than an outdoor walking boot.
The only experience I have of this is warehouse work; walking about on concrete all day, it feels like you've had the soles of your feet beaten after a couple of days.

I have lowa boots for hiking and they're perfect. I'm sure they do a more civilian style patrol shoe, so's you don't end up looking all operator tacticool ;)

Lowa ain't going to be cheap mind.

If both you and your employer put in £60.... 120 quid will get you a really good pair of boots and leave you loads of options.

My advice as above try them on etc. But don't neglect your socks! Bridgedale are excellent and last forever. They are expensive but fit well, I never get blisters and they don't smell, an advantage of wool. You won't regret it :)
