Walkman or iPod?

Any of you who read these forum pages religiously will have seen some of my previous posts and realise that I have been deliberating recently on the various different MP3 player options available to me.

It's now come down to either an iPod Nano 6Gb or a Sony Walkman 6Gb. I really like the look of both and i'm sure that the sound quality is equaly as good for my needs. The walkman is a fair bit cheaper though so I'm starting to head in that direction.

The problem is that I spent quite a while converting every CD I own to MP3 via Windows Media Player (over 300 albums worth). My wife has an iPod Mini and my son has a Nano so I know that iTunes will happily copy across these mp3's to their players. What I need to know is if Sony's music library software which comes with the walkman will let me do the same? I am worried that because Sony own a record label, they will be extra hot on copy protection and ask me to insert every original Cd to convert music from it, and I will have to do the whole process all over again.

This is a birthday present from the wife - she will happily buy me which one I want but I have to chose wisely (her words not mine, I guess she has seen the amouint of things which I have bought and then changed my mind about and sold a few months later!) so here I am, asking you lovely guys and gals which one to buy, Walkman or iPod? pro's and con's on both would be appreciated as well as an answer to the above question.

joebob

p.s. does anyone know if the Sony Walkman 20Gb has a built in HDD or Flash memory - I quitye fancy a 20Gb but dont like the thought of the extra fragility of a HDD.

My NW (although it's not the one you're looking at, it's the 1 GB flash player) will take any and all MP3s, so there's no worries about copy-protection or anything like that. You have to use Sonic Stage/Connect to upload them, but it's easy enough to use.

I think you might be better off with the ipod seeing as you already have itunes set up. I've had a Nano for 3 weeks and theres barely a scratch on it, atm I keep it in the soft case you get. I just think people are exaggerating. But to be on the safe side I would get a hard clear case as I am going to.

Also, with the convex nature of the sony, I can see lots of scratches appearing in one spot on the player!

The Sony will handle MP3s perfectly fine, so no problem there (as has already been said)

SonicStage isn't really the best media player ever, but it does the job of transferring MP3/Atrac files to the device perfectly well in my experience.

What's the price difference between the two players?

Connect erm eeew tbh, Sonic Stage isn't bad though. Sorry to sound confused, but I didn't know there was a 6gb nano :\. The Sony probably has more battery than the iPod, and imo purely as a music player is better.

The Sony's probably going to be a hell of a lot cheaper, but afaik its a hard drive player whereas the iPod's flash based, and is therefore smaller and lighter.

I only ever managed to get 10 hours playback from my Sony nwa 6gig as opposed to the 25 hours Sony claim. Even using the ATRAC compression it never once got close to 25 hours. I sent it back and now I’m on the lookout for something else. No idea yet though.

On my walkman phone I had to transfer the songs using Sonys software otherwise it didn't recognise artists or albums and would only play the songs but that mad eit hard to find the song I wanted, the actual mp3 players may be different though, hopefully they are because I want one
