Have a towel rail/shelf based thing in the bathroom (inherited, rental property) with two fixing points similar to this http://www.bathstore.com/products/s...gclid=CO_2p_vd2sMCFYvnwgodDEIAqQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

The wall is just plasterboard with a cavity behind. Now one of the fixings has come loose so it's been on the wonk for a few weeks. The fixing has two screws, one above the other. But the problem is that the plasterboard has been wrecked and there's basically just a hole leading to the cavity behind it. I was planning to fill up what I was expecting to be a small void with no more nails/polyfilla, jam the wall plugs back in and prop it for as long as poss to let it set in.

But with a full wall cavity behind, how can I get some fixity?

Or should I rip it right out and start again 10cm above or below?

You could do this. I have had to do this on a few jobs where a good fixing was needed and it worked very well.

Where your fixings need to be cut a neat hole with a padsaw 100mm x 40mm.
Get a piece of laff 300mm long and screw a dry wall screw in to the center of it. Make sure its in well.
Slide the laff in to the hole and position it so it plumb and inline with where your fixings for the towel rail will be.
While you or someone is pulling the center screw to keep the laff tight against the back of the plaster screw 4 more drywall screws where the blue dots are on the drawing.
Unscrew the center screw and cut a piece of plaster board 100mm and 40mm and put in hole and screw in place.
Use some filler to go over the drywall screw heads and plaster the new bits of plasterboard.
You can use any size laff or timber you want. But it saves ripping the whole plasterboard off.

That rail full of towels seems a bit too heavy for being just fixed to plasterboard to me. You might find it'll do the same again.

The strongest fixings for plasterboard are toggle/butterfly fixings. http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/fixingtoplasterboard.htm. It would probably be better to put it in a new spot using these and see how it goes.

Better yet would be to fix to a noggin if they have put one in there somewhere.

That's what I did when we were renting and this happened, worked well but that was only a single towel ring. The nylon toggles did seem a much better design than the wide screw type listed above on that page that had been in previously.

I fitted a gun cabinet to plaster and dab wall by drilling a few 2" holes in wall and using a mortar gun fill behind plaster board with runny mix of dab - let it dry for a few days and good to go.

Those fixing screws are quite small so you need a good base behind them.

Simps idea is very good to.
