Looking at spending around £200 but i've noticed most of them come with Linux and this puts me off a little.

Is it anything to worry about or should i stick with XP only?

Will be mainly used for web browsing and msn.

What information can you give me and what can you recommend?

Nothing wrong with Linux! It would fit your needs just as well as windows, but without the viruses and such. Linux has firefox and a handful of msn clients. Although, they may give you a crappy linux distro, so i would put Ubuntu on it.

You can get a Windows Eee 901 but thats about £299.

If you want it for browsing why so anti linux? As long as it comes with a built in web browser it really doesn't matter, in fact probably better at least no need for anti-virus. Not sure if linux has MSN own software.

Installed Ubuntu onto brothers laptop, it works fine and isn't so demanding on the machine, seems faster and with less memory usage. So I think even a Celeron with 512MB will be fine with Ubuntu, with XP it'll run like a dog running out of RAM into swap.

The linux distro it comes with is fantastic for what it's supposed to be doing if I'm honest.

It has a Messenger client that works with AIM/MSN and a few other big players, Firefox Browser built into it, an email client built in. Open Office.org installed so you've got your free versions of Excel, Word and Powerpoint etc.

They've really crammed everything you could need for a basic portable netbook onto it and the 8gb SSD model leaves you with around 4-5GB free IIRC.

Excellent 4/5GB should be more than enough. Am I able to transfer files (pics/vids) through a USB pen to my main Vista computer?

Yeah the Aspire One comes with three USB ports on it, pop a usb pen in and you should be able to transfer the files relatively simply.

Can't confirm 100% though as I haven't tried myself.

USB memory sticks will work. There is also the option of memory cards.
I use FTP to move files between my AA1 and my PC's - I can't be bothered (and I don't know how) setting up SAMBA.

I recently splashed out on an AA1 for word processing on the train. Top piece of kit I must say. I'm now starting to consider whether I really need XP on my main machine, as linux seems to be so much quicker.

Ginga
