Want to buy a Raptor, important information inside.

Having been in the market for a new Ext. HDD I came across a very interesting item: -

74 GB LaCie d2 , 1 x SATA , 10000 rpm , 8MB Cache.

And what do you know, inside that lovely Lacie box is a 74GB Raptor, and the best part is that the whole thing retails for only £75 inc VAT :eek:

I know if OCUK get them in they will sell very well as the OEM Raptor is currently £105 inc. VAT... so in other words you get a free SATA external enclosure and £30 off, bargain!

Price is not withdrawn it's just out of stock at present, probably due to the fact its at a silly price.

Would there be much point to having a Raptor in a USB enclosure? I'd have thought that the USB interface would negate any performance increases you get from such a fast drive.

It would in terms of transfer speed yeah. USB 2.0's theoretical maximum speed is 60MB/s I think but actual transfer speed is somewhere around 40MB/s max. In either case its the limiting factor.

However I think the point of the OP is that by purchasing the Raptor this way, you get it cheaper than you would by buying the drive on its own AND you get the sata enclosure too.

Scrap what I said above about USB 2.0. This product appears to connect to your PC via a SATA (150MB/s) connection using the supplied PCI card.

if that price is genuine, it seems like a bargain. a pricerunner search shows the product at far higher prices though.

In addition it seems odd to have an external 10k disk.

Well I found one somewhere and it seems to be in stock. Tempting...but then I look at the Seagate 320GB I could get for the same money.

Shouldn't really be spending anything on my PC anyway!

Called 3 places so far where I found it on for cheap. One place said it was discontinued and the other 2 places had slightly suspicious websites and didn't answer their phone.

Think of it more as an investment TheVoice. These would sell for a nice profit on a well known auction site

the drive in question is no longer, lacie droped it last month and the prices were for the last few left........
