Hi. I've got a C2D and I want to help! Only issue is I'm incredably lazy.

I'm gunna have a quick look for the client now. Please post dead easy steps on how I can just make it go.

Lol - this is written in one of the links:

I can't be bothered with any hassle, can i still help?
Yes, yes and yes! We will bend over backwards to help you, all you have to do is post a thread in the dc forum with a title like 'help me start folding' and we'll do the rest.
Someone will take you though it step by step, and will answer any questions you have. We will never just point you to the sticky.

Anywho, I've managed to get it going. Thanks 4 help.

Hehehehe, welcome to the team.:)

What client have you set up? How many hours are you planning on running etc?

Welcome! :D

Any questions? Which client are you running? If the standard one, you can run one on each core to double your output - just ask.

To fold for the world greatest team he will definitely be using the best possible client and folding for a minimum of 30 hours a day!

Only slackers say there are only 24 hours in a day.

I started two of the console client. I linked to it off this site, is there more than one kind of console client?

I'm clocked @ 3.2GHz but I only have a 4300, hence 2MB of cache - does this greatly effect the performance?

It sucks I can't use the Nvidia GPUs, would not have got an SLI board if I had known that... :(

edit:// just realised I've got two more boxes here at home and a laptop - might see if I can get them going too. Tonight maybe - work time now :D

Right - I've arrived at work and done some like a good little numpty.

I have some questions - what's a QMD, how can I get points quicker, what's a borg, mental, SMP, quad, and paaaaaaaaaaaaaarp?

Slow down dude, don't get too excited, it's only folding.:)

Currently the best points you can get are with the SMP clients. There are 2 main clients one for XP/Vista etc and one for Linux. The Linux version is the most stable and although few of us run the incredibly geeky Linux we run the Linux Client through VMWare:

Using VMWare this way will net a goodly 1000+ points per day depending on how long you run your PC, mines just 18/7 due to noise.

Quad cores like the Q6600 can run at least 2 Linux SMP clients through 2 VMWare Virtual Machines and output lots and lots of points, see Cob's stats.

I'll leave it to the others to explain the etiquette as I am an ill educated oaf with the etiquette of a bulldozer.:D

Ok, that's interesting. Why do you get more points for using VMWare? I would imagine the overhead of running virtual machines decreases the productivity of the cruncher (did I use cruncher in context there?)?

EDIT: Did some reading - you can now use a native windows client as of March. Why do cob et al. use the linux one over VMWare? Also - the client is for 4-core CPUs, wouldn't it be better to run one client on a quad core rather than two?

I think it's just the way they have allocated to points.

The VMWare is very efficient, my C2D at 3.4Ghz can reach the heady heights of 2500ppd (points per day) with some of the work units.

Mind you, make sure you are Orthos stable before using it, I do believe the multicore clients are more sensitive to overclocking errors.

I'm stable. I'm only at 3.2Ghz! Are you running the SMP client on a duel core then?

Yep, an E6700, I will clock it higher in due course. Although I'm considering flogging it along with an E6300 to help fund a Quad Core CPU.

I'm running Ubuntu Linux inside VMWare which uses 85% to 93% of the CPU power but only 600 odd mb of the RAM. The other bit of CPU power is running the GPU client on a 1950XTX, which just plods along at a slow pace but every bit helps.

Previously I ran 1 CPU client and 2 GPU clients, and the Linux/VMWare setup beats it hands down for points.

EDIT Although with the twin GPU's folding sounded more exciting!!:D
