what's a QMD
QMD is an old core that uses a quantum chemical method for calculations and uses a large amount of memory (currently not in use)
Core
The actual .exe file that does the work (
their are 11, see here)
how can I get points quicker
Use cores that give bonus points due to the size/timescale/resources needed of the work units (WU) it's working on. Borg additional machines, run cruncher for more hours
what's a borg
any PC/PS3/Mac (crunchers) that runs F@H for your user name but is not owned by you. (eg. office workstation)
Cruncher
any device that will run F@H (including toasters)
mental
The members of this team that either own or personally run large numbers of crunchers (just look to the top of the leaderboard) usually quick to offer advise/help
SMP
Again a type of core - but their are specific types for 64bit Linux/windows/Mac - these currently give the best points per day (ppd)
quad
Quad core CPU
paaaaaaaaaaaaaarp
the noise made (aka the horn of a car) just before an active member is about to over take another active members.
Stomp
A successful overtake - creative writing is highly encouraged with the issuing of both parp's and stomps, but never offenceive
you can now use a native windows client as of March.
Yes its the windows smp client - easy to set up but it's still a beta so needs babysitting on 50% of pc's.
Why do cob et al. use the linux one over VMWare?
Cob uses 2 VMWare instilations running a total of 4 SMP clients.
most of us use 1 VMWare instilation with either one or two SMP clients
SirusB and Billy uses ubuntu native.
the client is for 4-core CPUs, wouldn't it be better to run one client on a quad core rather than two?
4 Core CPUs give the best ppd's and Cob gets 200% more ppd running 4 smp's cores than 1
2 Core CPU's (C2D, X2, PentiumD) will run the smp cores within their tight 3/4 day deadlines but really struggle on some of the WU that need 8MB cache.
