I would like to go to a btcc this year with my camera to either rockingham or silverstone

How do tickets work in terms of choosing where you sit/stand?
I basically want a unrestricted view where I can take interesting picturess of the cars on track. Maybe a corner etc.

Tickets seem reasonable in price

Your choice of circuit will depend on your zoom lens and panning skills, but tbh neaither are brilliant for decent photography.

For tickets, BTCC tickets will be a single ticket to get to almost all places, and then a couple of grandstands might be ticketed seperately. A general admission ticket will be fine.

Go to a track day first. It's free to turn up and watch and while not all of the track will be open you will still get good access to some areas. That will be a cheap way to get your eye in. Have a look what's on at Silverstone and Rockingham.

thats a good idea. rockingham is only 35mins away from me hence the original choice.
as this lens is target at this sort of photography and its something i am interested in i thought it would be a good way to spend a few sundays

You can get decent pics at both tracks, Silverstone would probably give more options at the BTCC, Rockingham you feel a bit far away from the cars but the grandstands give decent views and your lens should help you get that bit closer. Plus you get a great day of racing into the bargain. :)

Silverstone is ok but can be limiting in some ways. You'll find you get basically the same pictures that everyone else gets because there are only so many places you can get to.

Luffield has a nice low fence so you get the cars at their slowest point but you need to be on the top couple of steps at the back and hope no one is in front of you.

Vale/Club are not too bad either as there's just a metal bar and you're well above the track, with the BRDC stand as a backdrop.

Just out of Club you can get right up to the fence (get your lens in a 'hole' in the mesh) and should should get a decent low angle shot. There's also a camera slot in the fence at the exit of Becketts (real pity there aren't more of these for photographers). You can also just about see over the top of the fence at Stowe to get the cars on the apex.

Other than that, just look for the marshalling gaps in the fence as they provide some nice angles that not everyone tends to spot.

Finally, don't necessarily think zoom. You can get some great shots with a wider angle and the Wing in the background. That also means you can use slower shutter speeds for more 'motion'.

Why don't you go to Snetterton? I went there last weekend for a HSCC event and I thought it was a great track to photograph at. Plenty of elevated viewing areas.

Any suggestions? I'll keep a lot further back without a fence to get in the way of the camera!
Knockhill is comfortably the best BTCC track for spectating. Brands Indy probably comes second.

Lydden Hill, Castle Combe and Mallory Park come to mind. None host BTCC events though.
Mallory doesn't currently exist as a track, does it?

Edit: Ah good, I see it reopened over the winter. :)
