Want to learn Java, Need some info.

Hey guys.

I am planing to start learning Java. I Don't know much about programming, only what I learned in college about VB. Only goes as far as If statements, loops, strings etc.

Now I done a little bit of research and I have already figured out that my first book that I should read is "Head First Java" based on very good reviews from various sites.

But the problem I am facing is that book was based on java 5, yet in two days time Java 7 will be released and I don't know how big the difference will there be. Would this mean that the book would be outdated pretty badly and won't help me learn Java much?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'd still go ahead and get that book it is very good, besides most people will still be using Java 5/6 for a while to come I would expect and you need to know the differences between all the versions, I don't really know anything about v7 yet but here's a link showing what was new in v6

Hey I've just started to learn Java. (literally just started as in last night) I was going to follow the tutorials here:

I'm only a couple of pages in but it seems to make sense so far, I was going to start here, see how it goes and get a book later if needed.

Get the head first book, learn the basics, then look at the changes in upgrades.

That book will be fine. It won't be significantly different to Java 7.
