Want to upgrade my cpu

Hi I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and was wondering if anyone could advise me on what I can get.
Currently got an AMD Phenom X4 9650.
It's an AM2+ (940) socket so what's the best cpu I can go for?
I'm looking for something that'll run high end games but also realise an AM2+ socket might limit me a bit.

Thanks

Hi again, I've since received the processor discussed. It fit into the socket perfectly and was all set up. When I tuned on the pc I encountered an issue where it said that their was a mismatched CPU and a fatal error had occurred. Does anyone know what's wrong? Is it not compatible after all? :(

I'm just guessing but if the new CPU wasn't compatible I don't think it would boot at all. As it's getting as far as displaying the error message I'm wondering if it just needs the BIOS reset to defaults. If you can't press F2 or whatever, perhaps clear the CMOS from the jumper on the motherboard.

Edit: and does have the motherboard have an up to date BIOS?

Hm ok I'll try pressing F2 on the error screen as you say. I'm not sure how to do your second suggestion but I'll try that after the BIOS reset.
I haven't updated my BIOS since I got the PC since from what I've read, with the BIOS it's best to go with the 'If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it' idea. Do you think my BIOS might be out of date and therefore doesn't support this newer CPU?

Deffinately update the bios the 960t is technically a hex with 2 cores disabled. Your bios needs to be able to support x6 cpu's for the 960t to work. Update and reset the bios and see if that helps. Use the cmos reset jumper on the motherboard or take the battery out for a few mins.

Well sadly I'm still experiencing the same issue after updating the BIOS. The exact error is CPU mismatch detected, fatal error occurred. I had to shut down the pc and put the old cpu back in.
I've had one issue where my old heat sink is attached to a fan which is locked to the side of my case; so instead of installing the new heat sink I've been using the old one. This wouldn't be the cause of a mismatch error would it?
