WANTED: E30 325i

So I've some spare cash and have always had a soft spot for these. Grew up with them and always loved them, still do. When I see a nice one I sex wee.

What should I be looking for. Part seem relatively cheap for consumables anyway but I want to know about pitfalls.

I'm looking at maybe £3.5 - £4k

I fancy that the re-sale value will be almost unaffected and can see these going proper classic.

Any thougths?
 
E30 325i's are the most overated BMW in the universe and are scene taxed to **** as a result. You'll spend 5k on a car that will give you the ownership experience of a 100 quid banger, constantly fighting the rot and bits falling off what is a 20 year old car thats normally been driven hard its entire life.

Admire other peoples E30's instead :p

Or use the money to buy your 530d :p
 
To be fair the E30 is an absolute bloody hoot of a car, when in good condition. The issue is that they are seriously bad value for money.

One of my friends has a mint 325i Cabriolet (resprayed, retrimmed, new hood, refurbed alloys etc etc) which is a hell of a lot of fun on the right day.

The issue is though, that it is now a ~£6000-7000 car. It has a mid 80's interior with toys to match, manual hood, etc etc. The same money almost buys an E46 Cabriolet.

Makes them seem rather pointless to me, as much as i think they are good.
 
I would rather a pukka E30 cab over an E46 cab, purely for the fact the E30 looks better and that's the point of a cab... looks. The lack of toys and newer mechanics is, in my opinion, a good compromise for the experience of owning a good looking classic, even if the car in question is overrated.

All down to personal opinion, could you live with an expensive older car without wishing you spent your money on a newer toy?
 
I think some people just like the older cars.

Myself i have a huge soft spot for the E28 5 series cars, i owned a E28 518i and loved it every day it was with me, but was forced to get rid of it due to financial constraints....(running 3 cars just wasnt viable)

But i wouldnt thank you for any other BMW other than the E46 M3 (pure sechs)
 
Are you looking for a Sport or 'just' a 325i four or two door? They are already 'proper' classic for the most part as they started making them in 1982 and stopped in 1990, so even the youngest is nigh on 20 years old now - barring the cabriolets, which they made until '93 - but even so...

Pitfalls are knackered suspension components from age, worn interiors, cheap 'mods' done by previous owners, rust, shot head gaskets and warped cylinder heads. Rest is just general 'old' car stuff really. Buy a good one with history and it'll be just fine - buy one that's been abused or hacked about and it'll just be a pain. Parts are relatively cheap and easy to get hold of from the likes of ECP and GSF, plus BMW dealers still quite happily service and maintain E30s. Quite easy cars to work on as well, although the cambelt can be a bit of a chore to replace.

BMW dealers can help you with the original specifications and service history if there's little left, or it's missing. They won't give you specifics unless you own it but my local one will quite happily entertain 'general' enquiries about history if you're polite.

Funny, and I know what you mean - but I'd dispute that. You can buy an exceptionally nice sport for about 2-3k that will be reliable and not require much outside of routine maintainence, or a really nice four door or iS for 1-2k that will be in excellent condition. Only suckers believe, or pay, scene tax prices and end up with knackered old nails that haven't seen any love.

One question though, how are they overated? People love them because they're light, simple, great fun to drive and rewarding to own. I wouldn't say they were overated :) Certainly the cooking spec 316s and 318s aren't much to write home about but a clean example of either is still a charming, fun and reliable daily car, to say the least.

I know mine was the less desirable four door but hell, that only cost me a grand, didn't have any rust barring a few paint blisters and nothing ever went wrong or fell off. I drove it for 6 months, put 5000 miles on it and all it ever needed was an oil change and some plugs.....Lovely car to drive too.

Even sold it for 500 quid more than it cost originally when the time came to move it on. Not a net profit by any means but a decent return on the initial purchase price! :) If you look after it, its value will remain the same, or increase, although that depends on how good you are at selling it at the end of the day :D

Charming.. Now there's a word you don't hear used to describe cars often enough. I agree. A nice E30 is a classic. It has a certain charm/air of class about it. Your 325 looks fabulous. I'd rather see more looked after older "classic" cars on the road than row after row of brand new Corsa, i10, Astra, Focus etc etc. Obviously I'm not talking about an old Cavalier or something... You get my drift!

Lucero, if you like them and you want one, go for it. As Lashout said, you don't need to pay 5k for one.

It is a very rare colour to find an E30 Sport in, you hardly see Granite silver....plus point if you intend on keeping it for a bit!

The car is excellent condition and is still in its standard factory trim, except been tuned by interpro in the early 90's and it is running at around the 180-190bhp mark.

Apart from this and the half scorpion exhaust and mtech2 rear spoiler the car is completely standard and unlike most still has its original high compresion engine and original 15"bbs alloys.

This car would be factory standard if it had a tech1 spoiler fitted and the scorpion exhaust and bbr starchiped ecu swaped for standard units.

There was over £800 spent on this car last november. The work included a new clutch, head gasket, water pump and cambelt and a few other bits. I have continued to spend over the year and have fitted new brakes all round, recent oil change, recent new tyres all round, brand new interior wiring loom and have detailed the car extensively. There is no dirt in the arches or underneath the car, you can even see the original yellow bilstien suspension gleaming.

Overall its superb for an old phase 1 e30. The underside is rock solid with no corosion what so ever, the scuttle, battery tray are rust free as is the floor pan and roof. The only rust on the car is on the rear arches which will both need repairing, the rust is on approx 20cm at the most of each arch so not bad. It has not infected the inner arches. As its been a daily driver the front bumper would benefit from a respray as would the rear of the side skirts, the bonnet would also benefit from been changed as there is 3 small dents present.The boot lid is showing signs of corrosion on the edge. The rear number plate is split but i have some black show plates to go with the car.

The engine is the best m20b25 i have heard and experienced, it simply purrs away and pulls like a train in every gear and uses no oil or water.

The interior is excellent, i doubt you will find better. The only thing to mention is the piping on the drivers bolster needs sticking down,and there is light fraying on the passenger bolster. The trim is the dark houndstooth recaro trim, The original mtech1 steering wheel and one peice gearknob are still fitted with wear consistant with the millage. The plastic cover that goes in the top of the glove box is missing.

Just a case of getting into the mags and classifieds and rooting around for what you want!

Don't be put off by mileage - although the lower you can find, the better, for resale purposes. Mine was on 130k when I sold it and felt excellent in every respect, so they can take it (as proven by the many thousands around with much, much more on them than that :D).

I haven't owned the car long as i've just needed it as a runaround until my own e30 project was completed.Whilst i have had owned the car it has had a full inspection 2 service carried out along with a cambelt and all fluids changed at an e30 specialist. The car was originally an auto but was converted a few years ago.i have recently looked at loads of e30s as i've needed a shell for my project and this car is solid the arches scuttle sunroof area and inside the boot are mint and i can't see any rust anywhere!This is a nice unmolested sport with loads of history and it even has its tool kit and torch as well. This car is ready to go and be enjoyed!

Not bad....converted though.

Plenty around if you dig - I'd get the BMW specific magazines as well as the general classics and have a plough through :)

Go everywhere - The E30 Zone owners club is a great place to start, then there's Classic Cars For Sale (web), Car and Classic (web), Autotrader, any BMW magazine, any classic trader or car magazine, your local paper :p

Always the ever-present bay of E as well.....Gumtree if you're prepared to filter through the various local sites too....
 
I agree its fantastic looking but its not timeless. It's very much an 80's car - it epitomises a lot of the 80's car culture IMO.

I don't really see what 'balls' are required - They aren't exactly rare exotica with a highly sprung engine. Value wise a Good genuine sport isn't going to be depreciating anytime soon and Mechanically they are pretty damn reliable.

My suggestion would be to get absolutely the best shell you can find and worry about the mechanicals much, much later. Replacement engines are pennies compared to probably sorting rust.
 
I don't think so - the E36 design has aged very poorly looking at examples near me and they don't seem to last as well. They're not as clean or as stylish and just look dated and old now - but a crisp, sharp, red-braces E30 with some nice bits on it really stands out and looks great.

Interior doesn't seem as nice on some E36 examples either - obviously the top spec leather ones are OK, mind....
