Hey all

I've reached a point where my old PC no longer functions particuarly well and can't run most modern games, cosequently a friend is helping me put together a pc i wont have to upgrade/replace for a good while.
We have a build in mind but i was hoping you folks could take a look and let us know if we've overlooked anything or are making any major mistakes, any feedback would be appreciated.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard [GA-X58A-UD7]

RAM: OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 2000MHz PC3-16000C10 Low-Voltage Triple Channel (OCZ3G2000LV6GK)

Graphics cards: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card [90-C3CH90-W0UAY0KZ]

Case: Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black [0761345-08120-7]

Hard Drives: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD1002FAEX)

Processor: Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail [BX80601920]

Cooling: Thermalright TRUE Copper CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3)

Blu-ray drive: LG CH08LS10 8x Blu-Ray Reader/16x DVD±RW - Black (OEM) [CH08LS10.AUAU]

Power supply: Enermax Galaxy 1000W EGX1000EWL ATX2.2 Modular PSU [ega1000ewl]

I already realise that the GTX480 may not be the most cost efficient card but it looks to be the only way to have a 3d capable machine that can also do DX11.
I'm intending to overclock the processor to 3.5ghz and run the hard drives in Raid 0.

This is going to take a pretty big chunk out of my savings so i want to get it right so again any feedback or thoughts would be appreciated.

The only thing I see missing is a SSD?

And if your not overclocking to high then the Titan Fenrir cooler is cheaper.

Hey guys,

Thanks for pointing out the possible CPU Cooling Issue, I will now be going for:

"Titan TTC-NK85TZ Fenrir CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775/LGA1366) [TTC-NK85TZ]"

Is SSD really going to be that much better than 2 Sata III drives (6gb/s) in Raid 0 setup?

I prefer the space more than I di not having to hear the clicking :P

only SSD will make use of that 6gb/s connection, traditional hard drives wont really cut it tbh. if you had 2x ssd's on sata3 in raid 0 -then that would be some serious performance. of coruse you would need a storage drive on top of that.

If your looking for an all round gaming PC i'd suggest getting a 5970 instead of 2 480s. 2 cards in SLI and Crossfire don't work in older games. 1 of these cards blitzes a 480. Save your self 200 quid and get a better mainboard such as the new to be released Asus Rampage 3 as that looks like a bloody good board and is designed for games.

You only need to run games at 60fps+ for it to be smooth, anything higher is pretty pointless. The Asus motherboard look lush in a windowed case and will give you plenty of overclockability.

Could go SSD or go RAID0, SSD will be faster but depending on which one you go for, don't buy a cheap SSD as they perform pretty ****, my RAID0 setup out performs the cheap OCZ SSD drive. Obvouisly if you want pure peformance buy one of them intel SSDs that cost the earth! I don't know how a 2TB RAID setup would work performance wise. You could have SSD for the boot drive then another 2TB or something for the Storage. If you don't need much space obvouisly a RAID0 SSD setup would be imense.

RAM wise It's probably better to get some better RAM maybe some Corsair Dominator GT 6GB as it will have lower times and give you better peformance and overclockability once again.

Its up to you, personally thats what I would do get all of your system to high end then if you feel the need to add in another 5970, You could stay with Nvidia but there not much better and you will have **** drivers for a few months before they fix them. If you lay the basics down such as the motherboard, RAM and CPU build from that either way your PC will be decent for the next few years.
