Hey fellas

I currently run a 2.8 P4, gig of corsiar ( no idea what speed ) with a ultra slow IDE HDD 120 gig backed up with a x800 gfx card. It's a sony pc, has done my proud over the years but I feel it is time to move on.

I have been looking up prices and im trying to build a new PC for under 500 including a copy of windows XP ( would prefer it with media centre )

So far ive got

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+ Black Edition 2.60GHz (Socket AM2) - £67
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit - £70

but ive no idea which board to get, case or powerpack and so on or even if i can get better than the above for my budget.

So any tips or links to a build would be much appreciated

Comes in at £550 doesn't seem like a bad deal, get the feeling i have missed something and it is late so sure someone will correct me if have missed anything!

EDIT: The above spec really depends on what it is being used for, if gamin of course a graphics card will need to be added

This is what i have so far

any tips?

I basically use it for World of Warcraft ( not the most demanding game ) a bit of football manager and mainly downloading and so on.

I don't really want to spend a lot of the gfx card considering my x800 runs wow like a dream now, so i dont want to be spending 200+ on a card thats never gonna get used on a game like crysis.

Anything missing? Does the full tower case come with a PSU or do i need to buy one? and will i need a fan and what not for the CPU?

personally prefer "Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (ST3160815AS)" but that is just personal preference.

Also, am pretty sure that you will need to buy a PSU

A couple of thoughts.

Do you really need the Nforce 570 SLI board? There is a foxcon Micro ATX for about £35 that has 4 x SATA raid, gigabit lan and supports a single x16 PCI-E graphics card. Not sure about the overclocking options.

Buy the OCz 2x1GB 6400 ram at at £35

Also I would avoid the 160GB HDD and plump for at lease a 250, preferably a decent 500

Looking at the cost of the mainboard and the CPU I Can't help but think you'd get a lot more out of an intel system based on a P35 motherboard and an E2200 or E2180

The E2200/2180 should easily clock over 3Ghz with stock cooling.

Also .... do you need a graphics card ?

If the budget is tight you could get one of the Antec cases with an Earth watt 380 Psu and then upgrade later if needed. These are around £45

The 380w can supply 27A combined at 12v ( 2x 17 independant) so would run a quad and a 8800GTX / 2900XT. With the components here.... no sweat even overclocked it won't push 200w

Spend the change on branded memory and mainboard.... with a bigger HDD and happy days.

The tech in the 160 drives is outdated so xfer rates are slower for a few £££ saving

What Wipe suggested but ditch the AS5. The thermal compound on the Freezer 7 is perfectly fine. Applying AS5 would just add hasstle.

I agree with WIPE's build and his suggestion to push the boat out for a corsair HX520 power supply. Some of this cost can be recouped if you drop the cooler and the AS5 if you want to leave it at stock (or have a mini overclock).
