Hey lads and lasses. I've been looking to get into photography.

Looking to spend £500+ on a digital professional type camera. Need the camera and some lenes.I'll spend slighly more if needed. Have recently become interested in it. Seeing some of the pictures on here and having a go in South Africa with an old Cannon T50 has given me the bug.

I would be looking to buy in the up and coming months.I am more than happy to buy second hand or brand new. But second hand would face me with good value for money?

So I was looking for a camera which is of decent build quality, doesn't go very out of date as soon as I get it home, quite good for a beginner yet will allow me to gain expirence and learn to use its functions to the full.

I'm guessing I will be wanting to spend more than £500 really but thats a start.

I have herd good things about the Nikon D70 and Cannon 350D ranges!?

Also where is a good place to look second hand/ brand new?

I was thinking about the London Camera Exchange.

For a body and lens, ~£500 you should be looking at Nikon D50, Canon 350D and Pentax DL2.

Best thing is to head into your local camera shop and have a look/feel/play about with the various bodies. They are all very similar image quality, features, price etc.

I was in the same position about a month ago, read reviews, looked around etc, but the best way of deciding imo, between three similar cameras is how they feel, how user friendly they are etc.

Personally, i'd go for the D50, Nikon have a massive range of lenses, and it just felt a bit more solid and nicer to hold than the 350D.

Edit:
Just noticed you've mentioned the D70, if you cna streatch the extra ~£150 over a D50, then get it.

definetley go to an independant photoshop, i went to one last week and got a 350D I just liked it more than the Nikon, but its just personal preference

So whats a good price for these things bearing in mind i'm only starting up. What savings could I make 2nd hand over brand spankers? Say I went for the Nikon D70? Would I be able to get that quite a bit cheaper second hand if I hunt about?

So camera body, and 2 lenses say? Would that be a good place to start. Guessing I can get away without having a flash for a while.

Well I have always had an interest and wanted to get into it. I have been using an old Cannon T50 while in south africa for a month and have really taken to it and need a new hobby ;)

Hence looking for a cheapish camera.

Then before you go splashing out on an expensive new DSLR, I'd suggest you take yourself off to your local college and do a basic photography course to get you started. Something like City & Guilds 6923 Priciples of Photography would be a great starting point - I think you're looking at around £75 if memory serves me correctly.

It's a great way of learning the basics and more advanced techniques of using a SLR and will probably prove invaluable for getting you started in the right direction. You'll be able to use your T50 for it and once you've completed the course you'll have a better idea about what camera you need to buy and what gear you'll need to invest in.

Theres a lot of fun in it even if your learning on a course. Its still a practical experience. If you care to go solo then thats upto you and so.. back to the camera choice.

If your going Dslr then Its almost certian to be a Canon Vs Nikon situation. Personally been a Canon user myself I am happy with my 20D set up and a small few Pro lens's. I have been swung to like the Nikons colour output a tad more than the Canons but as far as interactivity of user to the camera I personally prefer the Canon's set up. I find them a dodle to use.

Have noticed there are other cameras like the 'Fuji FinePix S9500' around my budget but are Nikon/ Canon the two brands to really look into.

I have friends with Nikon D70 and Canon 350 camera so I can have a play about with them.

Also if I go second hand but spend the same kinda money £500/600, what camera could I be looking at then which is better than the 2 mentioned.

The 9500 is a great camera in the right hands. A friend has one and produces some truly outstanding shots with it.

DSLRs will give you every temptation to spend spend spend spend. This is why I started with a bridge camera (Minolta A200), to see if the hobby was really for me before spending serious money.

If you are very self disciplined and will stick to a budget religiously go DSLR, if not go for a bridge cam like the Fuji you mentioned. Don't buy on specs alone, handle the cameras first.

Just spent £1300 + on a DSLR and bits, the devil inside will tempt you ;)
