Wanting to play an MMO

Loved eve, what an awesome game. If i didn't live in a messed up time zone (+4 GMT) i would still be playing. Had several accounts including a 100mil sp super carrier pilot and a small fortune in the bank :)

Just wasn't working out for me finding decent times to log and roam between the big UK and USA peaks.

It's the whole top down thing that puts me off games like ultima online... I dunno I just think an MMO should be 3rd person or 1st. No doubt though it was an excellent game in its day from what I've heard of it.

hehe ay, I like the style as it's simple and works well :) but I am also a sucker for sexy graphics haha xD looked at the min spec for the game the other day.... oh boy did I laugh. :p

think people have made more powerful potatoes :p

ay wow feels so n00b friendly these days it's taken some of the fun out of it imo.

hoping archage beta will be more open to the public...i.e.... I don't want to pay for it :p

ay being different is a bold move in the world of mmo... but it needs to be something that the public will actually want or as said... it will flop as people won't show interest.

I got bored of wildstar quite fast as i have of most mmo's since WOW. I'm thinking of trying Marvel Heroes, what that like?

Don't get stuck into an MMO, it's not worth it. Plenty of normal games to play that don't take your life away and where you won't have to deal with bunch of morons all the time.

If you've got a group of friends that you can play with then sure but I wouldn't get into one nowadays by yourself - it's all grinding game and there are so many better things to do in life than collecting pixel herbs for 6hours a day.

I recently really enjoyed EVE, but I just didn't have any guidance/goal after doing all the starter careers so gave up. Was a bit lost to be honest.

If I had a goal, I would have loved it, sunk a fair few hours into the tutorial stage lol.

The point of EVE is you don't need guidance or quests or theme parks to do... It's all about making your own story, finding your own way and community. It's about the unscripted brilliant events like the Titan pilot who miss jumped and ended up sparking a colossal battle involving thousands of ships.... or the guy who ran a player controlled bank and absconded with everyone's isk, his only parting message "so long and thanks for all the fish" that put him almost at the top of the bounty hunter contracts. Or like when I got podded and had my plex stolen by some bumhole only to have some of my real world friends who are in one of the major pirate groups annihilate his entire corp, holding various members hostage until they handed over their entire inventory... I lost one plex, I ended up with 15 as compensation.

That's the beauty with EVE and what could easily be put in a more traditional setting like a fantasy based MMO... I'm not saying don't use good ideas from other MMO's I'm just saying use them in your own way built on a true sandbox!

quite intrigued by all of these suggestions.

thinking of starting up a new game over the weekend (despite a million unplayed steam games)
its between rift, eve and wildstar at the moment.... any suggestions as to which would be the best.

as a pointer to my gaming history i like fps as a rule, and for RPGs iv always been a massive FF fan, and skyrim was the last game i properly sunk my teeth into...

haha that pirate story sounds awesome! they really captured it with the trailer for the last expansion ( I think) with the wolf ship out on a wander... protects the random miner who was being attacked by opportunists.

they report back to their corp who launch a force to go help/recover goods/vengeance, they bump into someone else... etc....etc.....

the butterfly effect I think the name of the video was. a tiny action somewhere can cause a chain of events with a massive reaction :D it is what you make of it :)

I disagree about not getting into an MMO alone at this stage though. the first few MMOs I played I went in alone and soon made good friends and found great communities :D not been on wow for over a year but I know I can just rock back on and be like I never left :) even been out to norway twice to go visit one of the guildies :D you just gotta ignore the douchebags :p

Yeah it was quite funny.... my mates group of pirates is pretty large and very high in abilities for the most part, they kept one guys POD, the guy who robbed me in a tractor beam for 11 days taking shifts to hold him in place...

Being a miner, and getting involved with a mining corps I was able to arrange a deal where we would provide them with much needed materials while they provided us with protection... it worked well until I quit the game and then my mate told me they liquidated the corps I was in... I felt guilty but that's EVE!

Manners.... honestly go for EVE just keep the below graph in mind, it's certainly the hardest to get to grips with but ultimately the most worth while..

I even met players who've managed to turn playing EVE into their job, the make a decent income from it in the real world.

No one mentioned final fantasy xiv, a realm reborn yet? easy to get into, nice graphics, storyline and cutscenes while your leveling up breaking the usual mmo grind, and well populated, the website advertises 2 million subscribers, so one of the most successful mmos since wow. http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/

Something a bit more niche try the secret world, fully voiced cut scenes set in modern day and free to play once you've bought the box, but there is some dlc in the store but dont need this until your like 100 hours into the game! can play it a lot like a single player game if you want as quests are a lot more interesting than usual mmo quests.

if you fancy a wizard-y type mmo give Asheron's Call a look in.

Now it's gone b2p, for approx £7 you can play it as long as you desire, and despite the small population and dated graphics, the gameplay is still fantastic and unlike anything on offer in wow, guild wars 2, rift or probably anything else.

it has

*huge non instanced world
* massive dungeons, some rival legend of grimrock levels for the vastness
* no pre defined classes - you get skill credits at character creation and use it to learn the skills you want: now that wizard with lockpick and sword skills is possible.

* get xp and use it to raise any skill you have trained in any order you like.
* use portal magic to 'tie' to portals then re summon them later for anyone to go through
* summoning skill lets you summon monsters to fight for you

it's old - but it still rocks ! join us on the leafcull server ! >:)

just had a look at that, dont think i could get past those 1st gen 3d gfx! think ill stick to ffxi for my real old skool mmo fix.

Wildstar is an incredible game, but only if you have people to play with. Solo questing isn't much fun at all. Solo endgame is non-existant. PUGs cannot realistically do the content.

Most people who gave up on it probably went at it alone and ran into those problems.

I'd say Rift - not only because I like it, but because it's fully free to play. You can subscribe, but it doesn't unlock any content, it just provides bonuses, daily/weekly gifts, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, as i have never been on an MMO before, im swaying towards rift, as i think 9.99 a month for someone who may/may not enjoy it, is a pretty steep investment...
i think i will try rift first, and then if i enjoy the online experience then i will have to look at getting stuck into one properly.

If you fancy Eve, but are concerned by the learning cliff, then you could do worse than apply to join Eve University. An awesome player-run learning corp, they'll teach you a ton of stuff, help you with free stuff and offer a ready made group of people to learn alongside. They'll teach everything from ship loadouts to mining to null-sec and wormhole ops. I started out in EU, and was a diplomat for them and then events manager for a while. Thereafter I joined a null-sec corp which was great fun flying cloaked ships.

I will also mention Secret World. Great game, with a fun concept and some brilliant writing and dialogue. The community can be somewhat elitist, but it's the best of the current MMOs in my opinion.

Hope you find a fun home to live in for a while.

I've never played WoW but I'm considering it, my only concern is that it might be dated and might not have a lot of life left in it.

Granted it's still based on a 2004 graphics engine, but I'm told that the engine's getting a revamp in the upcoming expansion with new character models. Wishful thinking, but would be nice to see Sims 3 standard here. I may even re-sub for it :-) Can't comment for end-game in Cata or Mists as I didn't play those, but as far as I'm aware, the game has been getting easier since vanilla. Those that haven't played for years, I believe you can re-sub and all of the expansions except for the latest are now free.

If you haven't played World of Warcraft you might as well start there. The next expansion is due out before the end of the year so that should inject a bit more life into it. I'll probably buy the expansion and re-sub for a month so I can see the new content and I suspect I won't be alone!
