as above can anyone recommend and?

Just has the feeling that I want to go find one

Depends what your budget is and how serious you want it.

For realism and mild pricing: DCS World (You need to buy most aircraft)
For realism and similar pricing but worse graphics without additional mods: Flight Simulator X + TacPac
Free: War Thunder (But you have to grind to get jets)

DCS all the way.
The "base" game is free, and includes a Russian Su25t jet and a P51. Download it and try it out.
Note that DCS is most certainly NOT Afterburner. Assume that you'll need to put some genuine time into it to get any good.
If you like what you see, the next step is choosing the follow on aircraft.
The "simple" types are bundled within the FC3 and include an F15c, A10a, Su27, Su33, Su25 and Mig29. By simple, it's the controls and complexity. Still looks the same and has apart from the Mig29 has the same flight model. For example, to start the F15c, you turn on the electrics, close the canopy and turn on 2 engines. So 4 buttons and you're ready to taxi.
In comparison, the A10c takes roughly 5 minutes to conduct the startup sequence.

As a game, looks stunning, supports VR and is massively satisfying to learn to fly well.
Caveats are that for VR it requires serious PC hardware, works best if you use a good HOTAS, most certainly isn't easy and they're still working through a few "areas of opportunity", e.g. performance tuning, resolving the overheating on the Huey etc.

Just had a look dcs looks pretty good and I have it in download, was just away to ask about the base game and if it came with anything but you have just answered my question! I see all DLC’s come to over £1000:eek:

Downloading war thunder as well

Have to say that I rate Warthunder as a great arcade game. A sim it isn't. But really that's a question of where you want to go.

Ref DCS. Yes, it's easy to spend a lot of money, however:
- They regularly have sales, which is a great way to reduce costs
- There's a lot of free mods (NOT aircraft or maps). They include skins, missions, and re-packaging of existing aircraft, such that it can be made to look like something else. Some are really well done
- On modules like the A10C, it'll take you months to genuinely become fully proficient on it's use, so whilst they're not cheap, they're very satisfying
- The community is VERY good and helpful. There's loads of tutorial videos and similar to help understand things like weapon usage, startup sequences and so on

Just one point, don't buy it on Steam. Buy it direct from them to avoid potential future conflict issues.

You might aswell go with 2.5, just much better looking.
From your PC spec, should be fine on a monitor.
Note that the free P51 has no guns and the Su25t handles like a dog as it's rather lardy. All the same, will give you an idea of the complexity, controls and what it looks like.
Have a play, if you like what you see, ask away.

Ok 2.5 in downloads now! My measly 1.2MB/s maybe I’ll get to play it later tonight sometime. Do you use the keyboard? Gamepad or stick? Any recommendation?

You can play with a keyboard and mouse, I have no idea how good that is.
I use a HOTAS. As for recommendations, depends on how serious you are.
You can get entry level stuff for £50. I bought a Speedlink Airrow for my son for just under that, and it can do enough to get airborne and fly around.
Personally I was inclined to steer clear of both Thrustmaster and Saitek gear. Just read too many horror stories about them, even the Warthog, which looks awesome, but is known for having a plastic gimball and a throttle that occasionally bricks itself.
So for me, I went for a CH setup, which doesn't look anything special and only has 8 bit precision, but has a very good track record for reliability and serviceability.

I'm currently looking at a VKB or VPC solution, but you're talking circa £500 for for the joystick and throttle.

I’ll give it a try with the keyboard and mouse to star with see what like. I reckon it’ll be a lot of button pressing, I’m used to my Xbox one remote......58% and waiting! I’ve had a look fo the speedlink airrow But I think they are discontinued which is a shame a it looked cool! There is a speedlink phantom hawk or black widow? Just looking for something to get me up and started.

Just looked up what your thinking of and the vkb looks the real deal. :p

Go with your Xbox controller. No, it's not going to be as precise, but at this stage, it should be enough to see if the game is what you're looking for. After all, very niche product, and you either want it, or not.

Yeah it will be better than my keyboard, for me anyways, just for a feel of it.

I will update soon once I’ve had a shotty!

^Proper game (and manual!) I remember buying the game thinking it had a brick or something in the box...nope, just a 1000 page manual

No dude you use a proper flight stick and a seperate throttle (joystick on right, throttle on left) and if you want to hit it hard you get rudder pedals for the floor.

If you are not adverse to going retro, there are some awesome classic sims as the PC was renowned for flight sims. You would be missing out on some classics.

For example, Rowans Mig Alley. Very old school, no BVR fighting, simply jets and cannons. Very satisfying and atmospheric. When 'bitching betty' used to chime "Pyongyang" you knew trouble was not far away. Sadly the catch. For the life I cannot get it to work with Windows 10.

Falcon 4.0 was one of the last big box games I purchased and own to this day. I never played! Whereas Falcon 3.0 I played to death. I will never forget that you could (after blowing an enemy out of the sky) hunt down the ejected pilot and (laughing maniacally) open up with your cannon. Poor pilot would plummet to their death. Geneva Convention p'ah. Amazing this was programmed for its time.

Apologies for derailing thread further. PC Zone once produced an article based on splat-table pilots. Take off, flip the jet 180 degrees at low level and eject the pilot. If the pilot left a bloody mush on the ground - success! It was amazing that games in the nineties had this 'feature!' :D

I miss PC Zone. :(
