Warhammer Age of Reckoning Worth it?

Everquest. First XML based user amendable UI in an MMO.

Warcraft while very good has never been overly innovative. It has however always been very good at polish.

Agreed. Blizzard has a policy of polski.. err, polish.. that makes them look absolutely anal. But that's only because the competitors fall way short. And it's all down to the way they design their game.

Most, if not all MMO developers throw land mass down in it's entirety. Then they go about filling in the content, with different teams working on different areas simultaneously, but at differing stages. Any break down in communication that happens between the teams inevitably results in a game that can at times feel very disjointed. There's other pitfalls to this but I won't go into it.

Blizzard do things differently however. They go from zone to zone, one at a time, and put the content in. When they finish with the first zone, after making it as fun as possible, they move onto the second. If the second zone does not equal the quality of the first, they hammer on it until it does. All the people working on the game are on the same page.

It might sound like an obvious approach, and one that all the MMO developers would do. But they don't.

Anyway, I'm not a WAR fanboy, nor a WoW hater. I think most MMO's are equally disappointing tbh. WoW is a fine game, but things like NPC's with pop culture names, naked gnomes dancing in Ironforge, the fact that it's a loot pinata (everybody wins in WoW, even if you suck) and the idiot playerbase put me off. WoW just happens to be the one on the pedestal, so it's the one I throw rocks at the most.

Agree with the first bit.

But ... Do you not find the pop culture names amusing ? * I think people call them easter eggs ? *

You can just ignore the dancing gnomes ? I've not seen one for many months, With a player base that big, you're going to have a fair share of immature gamers and idiots.

That has nothing to do with Blizzard, that just the people that play their product and the way they use it.

To be honest, if I wanted pop culture I'd buy a womans magazine or watch Celebrity Big Brother. I don't really like seeing it in an MMO. I suppose gaming is a break from normal life for me, though I've never really thought that until now.

I take your point, but what about the guy who spams his laugh and cry emote while running around you in circles in Ogrimmar. Or the one who follows you around spamming the duel button. Or the beggar who sends you whispers. Or the lvl 12 who wants to group with your 65. Or the.. or the.. or the.. You expect the odd fruitcake in online MMO's, I've certainly seen my share of them in the games I've played. But WoW seems to have them by the bucketload. Ordinarily, they can be ignored. But little things add up over time, to the point when you wonder has everyone got a drool cup or what. Don't get me wrong, I've met some great players, really cool people. But the cool/nutjob ratio is out of whack in WoW.

I agree.

I never could find a WoW mod to allow you to hold infinite players on ignore. I only ever ignored a player for spamming, important ninja-loots and being extremely rude - but boy does that list fill swift.

If you havent already, you want to try LOTRO.

Been playing since last May. Very casually at first and building up, just got my first character to lvl50 (which was the cap before they released their first expansion and made it 60).

Spammers are very few and far between. In fact weeks go by and no player gives me any reason to think he's an idiot. Quite the opposite, people are quite collaborative and willing to give a hand. The advice channel is not spammed by people asking, and when they do, the answers are polite and to the point.

I think its all well to say that the creators/distributors of a game are not to blame for its community, but one way or the other the community is central to a game where you are interacting with all these people, and whatever the reasons, LOTRO has a good community.

Totally agree. The game in itself is very good - alas an overwhelming percentage of its playerbase seem to be socially retarded.
