Warhammer BETA.

A fair few of us have been complaining about the global cooldown and the 4 secs or so in between each autoattack for a while.

We tend to get shouted down or told that people want PvP fights to last longer. Which I understand, I just think increasing PC's HP's would be a better solution rather than the slower attack speeds.

I remember reading a few reviews saying the combat in AoC was slow, and in that you can spam the quickest attack every second if you're using a one handed weapon. Can't wait to see what the same people think about the combat in WAR.

I have been in beta since last July though so don't take my jaded thoughts on WAR in the same context as people who have only just started playing it.

That makes level grinding sound like so much fun ... :(

Most of the AoC people wont like WAR anyway, not because of the combat but because it doesnt have UBeR graphics and boobs and decapitations!1!!1drool!11!11!

Its a toughie with the combat speed, on my marauder and chosen, I can destroy a caster very quickly when I melee them. I guess if the combat was simply sped up, I would be able to drop a caster in the blink of an eye. Not particularly fun for either of us.

They could just up the players hit points of course, and obviously the monsters hit points too. I dont think thats really needed though, all they need to do is just remove the global cooldown, it would mean that some spells would need to change from being instas to having a 1sec cast time though in order to balance things, but that would do a lot to combat the feeling that its slow.

On the other hand of course, they might just say, this is the speed we want it at, if you dont like it, play WoW or something else. Who can say !?

One thing is for certain, some of the keep fights I have had are pretty close to some of the great keep sieges I had in Daoc. Fewer people of course, as its beta, but the closest I have had since Daoc, and thank god I dont have to do instanced "pvp" any more.

I agree, my post probably sounds too negative and I don't mention the special skills etc you can use in combat or like you say all the different ways to spend your time whilst gaining xp. It's just a really difficult job trying to get combat right for both PvE and PvP.

I really like PvP but I also want to enjoy the PvE side of things too, especially the combat. Also I'm pretty sure the dev's have basically said "this is the speed we want it at, if you dont like it, play WoW or something else" :)

A heavy slant towards PvP, hell if you wanted to, you can level from start to finish entirely via pvp and never fight any creatures at all. I wouldnt recommend it, but you could if you so wanted.

The game is centred around the capturing of zones, castles, battlefield objectives and ultimately smashing up the enemies capital cities.

Cool, AoC is well not what I expected & I want a real PvP focused game. Is there anywhere I can find a decent review?

I play AOC and have done since launch, I enjoy it but I may give warhammer a bash when it goes on open beta (is there one planned?). Is the combat slow in terms of animation? or that it takes a fair while to down mobs?

To be honest, not really. With the NDA still in place at the moment most of what you read will be half-details and light on info. You can find some beta folks who have done leaked reviews, but as always with people in beta their "review" is heavily slanted by personal preferences and so a bit hard to glean real info from it. (for example, I am loving the beta and the memories of daoc it brings, but others dont like the beta, so their thoughts will be more negative whereas mine are more positive :) )

There are these though...

Although as I say, they are pretty light on actual hard info, and to be honest, some of the info they do have is wrong. (like the gamesradar article which states that Mount Gunbad is in the Marshes of Madness, when in fact its in the Badlands)

There is an open beta, but as far as I know its limited to those people who got open beta access via preorder. Though possibly they might also do something like a limited number of keys through something like fileplanet etc.

The TTK (time to kill) on mobs is of course quite dependant on what class you are, as you would expect from most MMOs, the classes which traditionally kill quick in MMOs , kill quicker in WAR too.

I myself dont find the combat particularly slow, but then I am used to the slower early MMOs anyway. The thing that some people are saying is slow usually relates to melee, and often refers to the time between swings of the weapon. More animation and removing the global cooldown are 2 things that would help with that, I would imagine that animation will continue to be added to before release, but the global cooldown may be here to stay, or then again..may not. Hard to say what changes will occur before release :)

With the potential of it being released in the next 6ish weeks, will there be time for an open Beta?

The combat is much better than it was, fights on a similar level last between 15-20 seconds depending on class.

It is a fun game. As an current WoW'er/AoC'er and previously others (but not DAoC) its got real potential.

fileplanet always get beta keys, read into this below what you will but im sure those who didnt get the WAR Collectors edition (and pre-order box) will get access via that site

Calm Before the Storm.
R ed Faction fans rejoice, FilePlanet is proud to bring you the Exclusive Xbox 360 beta to our elite subscribers. Keys are limited, so grab them while you can - we'll be distributing them in batches. Many of you have sent me e-mails with your guesses, asking if Red Faction was the beta in question... It is NOT, the SINISTERLY HUGE BETA that has yet to be announced on FilePlanet is just so astronomical it's hard for me not to just blurt it out with glee. That being said, we still can't give it away - but keep those eyes peeled and fingers poised as all will be revealed in good time. This means if you aren't subscribed, now is the time to do it - because when the doors open to this event the FilePlanet bouncer will be checking your membership card at the door.

also, a lot of sites have 18/09/08 as the early start date and 10am 23/09/08 as the official launch date/time

Well, given that you can level via quests, or PQs, or scenarios, or open rvr, or keep battles. Really, if you are needing to grind levels, then you are doing something wrong anyway :)

tutut MMO'S on FFA PVP servers have to mean grind as fast as possible on day 1. It's the only way to do it ... let's XP!

I was in the WoW open beta - Pretty sure the full game was released around 4 weeks after the OB started, so plenty of time :)

war isnt free for all and you cant gank newbies.

if a high level player enters a zone below his level and goes to a pvp area of that zone he will be turned into a chicken.

anyway if you knew anything about WAR you would be aware the game is not a grind there are so many ways to gain EXP that you will always have a fun way of gaining levels without feeling the need to camp an area for hours on end for that next level.

I am actually tempted to buy a beta key from the preorder packs on ebay :o

hmmm I think you get a case and a couple a virtual items... looks legit.

Anyone else tried it?

I doubt the Ebayers will be selling there Early Access or CE item keys along with there Open Beta invite keys so u might just end up getting shafted.

I can't see the open beta lasting more than a couple of weeks, the still have to open Tier 4 to the guild beta so that has a good few weeks left to run.
