the only problem with PvP as i see it, is that from all the mmorpg's around at the moment its all about how much you've grinded and raided to get crazy good armours, and weapons, that resist most of the damage, and negate normal amounts of armour that people who don't grind in the game every day have. so pvp becomes almost completely pointless for anyone except those guys who join guilds and raid the top dungeons all day long getting the top armour drops.

the other problem is with games focusing more and more on what seems completely pointless pvp, they are making pve harder, because they assume everyone will have the top kit, and so make pve more difficult unless you also grind all day long for the best armours. so the knock on effect of the guys that play in the same teams grinding out dungeons is to make the game stupidly difficult for casual players.

lol, WoW has never tried to be predominately PvP. Blizzard only implemented more than was already there due to popular demand. They said they want to keep a balance between PvP and PvE in the game.

And I wouldn't say WoW's PvP is a 'poor attempt', infact the arena system has pretty much become an e-sport. There's sponsored teams with competitions and cash prizes.

I would say it is very poor. They had the right idea with Alterac Valley but then decided to go down the road of boring/arcade/meaningless 15 minute frag fests :(

I hope this game is not just full of instances, it would totally destroy the atmosphere and immersion more than the magic doors in EQ2 where you actually CHOOSE your instance...

I was looking forward to this; but although its still under NDA, and still in Beta, rumours I've heard are that is terrible, and they've got a lot of work on their hands to make it enjoyable.

Hope its not the case, I'm looking for a good MMO alternative to WoW.

I found the PvP when I went to gamesday UK very fun, certainly had more fun in that 30 minutes than I can honestly say I ever had in WoW. I never found WoW pvp worth doing as their wasnt a reason for it besides personal gain and thats just not my bread and butter really.

One of the reasons I enjoyed DAoC's pvp so much is because it actually had an impact on the world around you.

I have always thought that with MMO's as well. However I support more of a balance. Take MXO for instance (if you have ever played) the open PvP in that was awesome, you hit lvl 7 I think it is and its a free for all. Logging in and out and jumping around hard lines was a heck of a lot of fun. Just surviving was the best part of the game...

... However there was no point to pvp at all (despite there obviously being Machines, Zionists and Frenchies). If it had effected the world around it, be it with dynamic quests or land control the game would have lasted A LOT longer IMO.

An MMO has to have PvP in some form otherwise its a waste of time and (in my book) not a real MMO. You need balance and incentives as well as game immersion and dynamic effect on the world around you.
