So I've just installed my new wolfdale chip, maximus formula motherboard and Seagate barracuda hdd in my Antec 900 case, in the bios the NB and SB temps are about 26 degrees but my cpu is at 62 degrees! whats going on here? the cooler was pretty difficult to attach but i reckon it on properly, coretemp reads 52 for one core and 56 for the other, i was under the impression that the new 45nm chips were cooler. any thoughts?

What cooler are you using?

If it's the stock cooler, then they have significantly reduced them in size, so they shouldn't run any cooler with the stock cooler. Alsthough, it does see pretty high, even for a stock cooler (i am assuming you haven't overclocked it and that those temps are idle...)

Nothing can read the temps on the Wolfdales correctly. When i had an E8500 is was supposedly sitting at 36 degrees at stock setting while idling under high end water cooling.

i just played counter strike for half an hour and when i finished core temp read 80 degrees and AI suite read 67 degrees. could i have possibly mounted the cooler wrong or put on too much thermal paste? i removed the stock stuff and put a tiny bit on, smaller than a grain of rice and spread it evenly over the whole contact area. The rest of my system reads 25 degrees so it seems strange that the cpu is 35 degrees hotter and its only about and inch from the 25 degree north bridge which only has passive cooling.

Almost certainly not, but I do believe that it's better for stability to plug both in (or an 8pin connector if your PSU has one).

In any case, I wouldn't worry about the temps too much provided you're fairly confident that the cooler is atached properly.

My new build a couple of weeks ago was with an IP35 Pro and E8400 - checked temps in the bios the first time I booted up and... 244C!!! Was evidently not that hot or it would have probably been smoking!

Anyhoo, checked with coretemp once I had Windows installed and it reckoned temps were around 38C idle up to ~48C load with a Thermalright 90i, which I reckon is still a bit high.

To cut a long story short - don't believe the temps! Maybe a new motherboard bios will sort it out, maybe not. They're still decent chips tho and nowhere near as hot as temp reports say.

cool, well i get many different readings, idle i get 62 in bios, 58 in coretemp and 38 in AI suite and, load bios is 90 degrees, coretemp is 82 and AI suite says 67 degrees.

Hi Hawky 89,

Had similar problems to yourself having just bought a e8400.

Using:

Tsunami Dream (Thermaltake) Case (2 x 120mm fans)
Asus P5N-D Motherboard

Installed it with the (suprising small) stock cooler and had conflicting readings. After trawling the forums most people seemed to agree the best monitoring device was Core Temp. My temperature references (below) are from this device.

http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Anyway bottom line the temperature whichever device I used was too high for my liking. 45 to 46 celsius idle, up to 59 whilst gaming and over 60 celsius stressed (orthos).

My PC is in one corner of a room, not a great deal of ventilation behind and the room itself is always has the central heating on. I knew it wouldn't be possible to get the CPU really cool but over 60 celsius for me was unacceptable.

Trouble is with CPUs is no one really seems to know what a maximum safe operating temperature is or even if there is one. Cooler the better (within reason) to ensure the longevity is the only concensus of opinion.

Anyway I bought a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler from overclockers and some Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound . When it arrived I couldn't believe the size of it compared to the stock cooler (3 times the size). Really easy to install.

Same tests now give 40 to 42 celsius idle, up to 49 whilst gaming and 50 to 51 when stressed with orthos. This for me is acceptable due to the conditions of the room and the fact I use only 2 case fans.

I might add my CPU isn't overclocked, if I did I think I would invest in water cooling.

So do yourself a favour, get a decent CPU cooler (not expensive) and like me I guess you will cleave 10 degrees off its maximum operating temperature. I'm happy with a maximum temperature when gaming of under 50 celsius.

Best of luck buddy. Norton.

I'm having the same problem with accurate temps, using a ultra-120 extreme, bios is showing 12 degrees idle and core temp is around 37.

I've recently in an E8400 and I've got one core at 30c and the other at 51c! whilst at idle. Load temps don't go up much but theres still a difference of 20c between the two cores. Running at stock, overclocked makes no difference either. I suppose I''ve now got to try and reseat the hsf but I'm fairly sure thats ok.:)

well i ordered an arctic freezer 7, but after removing stock cooler, reapplying the paste and reseating the cooler i now get idle temps of 37 degrees and that goes up to about 55 load, so when my new cooler comes i think it will be a lot better.
