Warm winter coat

I've left it a bit late maybe, but I need a new coat.

Been too cold all winter and we're off to Disneyland Paris for 5 days the week after next so we'll be outdoors for most of the time we're over there.

I'm sorely tempted by a Canada Goose or perhaps a Fjallraven.

Anyone got one or suggest any others, worth the money?

It needs to be able to keep me warm!

Canada Goose is a bit overkill for this country - so far the last few winters - even the cold patches we've had recently - I've worn my M65 jacket with thermal liner and been perfectly comfortable and not had to resort to my proper winter parka.

That M65 looks really smart, but it probably isn't any warmer than the coats I already have and I've been so cold this winter. We went to Thomasland the week before Christmas and I spent the day shivering. I nearly bought a CG after Christmas but I was concerned I'd end up a sweaty mess in one!

Cold weather is all about layering up. Trust me I work on building sites all year round and this time of year I will wear a t-shirt, a sweatshirt, a fleece top and then my high visibility bomber jacket.

For my legs I don't wear long johns as I am tall and slim so can never get a good fit so I will wear my regular underwear, a pair of lounge/PJ pants and then my work trousers.

Two pairs of socks at all times in winter. Cotton socks under long boot socks.

Proper M65 jacket comes with an additional (removable) thermal liner which is pretty warm - the only downside they tend to expose the neck more than say a winter parka - can get them in a variety of styles from "designer" through to full military tactical.

EDIT: Shouldn't become a sweaty mess (depending a bit on which one) with the Canada Goose stuff - most of its pretty decent tech and will breath in milder temperatures (though everyone is a bit different as to what is acceptable/works for them). I highly rate Canada Goose as they might be expensive but you get what you pay for.

layers always win over big coats .. merino wool under garments tshirt/shirt thin jumper .. then thin coat and a wind blocker .. = toasty warm and you can still move about

I can't remember the exact name of the one I tried, it was a parka (Chateau?) that covered my backside. It felt very good and enveloping if you get my meaning. Maybe one of the Chilliwack Bombers maybe better for our climate.

Going to get some thermals tomorrow and have a trial run this weekend, not exactly going to break the bank and if they work all good.

I recommend Skogstad coats, well the parka I have from them, it's very warm when layered, but really fleece trousers and any half decent insulated coat keep you warm!

Does my brains seeing so many Canada Goose coats around. I see about 3 or 4 a day on my way to work, at lunchtime and on my way home. It's like £650 for their cheapest proper coat, how on earth that many people buy them for just cruising to and from work when it's not even that cold is mad. They've just got a distinctive label so people go mad for them. I get they do have their uses in really cold weather, but seeing so many bought for fashion reasons baffles me.

Possibly fakes I know people wearing brands like that who definitely have never spent £600+ on an item of clothing :s

Canada Goose is the real deal though not just a designer brand with a massive price tag slapped on it for the name alone.

Canada Goose is a fashion statement in this country due to lots of celebs wearing them due to their cost - complete overkill for our climate.
A £250 mountain equipment/Rab/ whatever down jacket is more than capable.... Unless you want to look like a celeb wannabe.

I just want to keep warm, I shouldn't have left it so late in the winter but I've spent the past 2 months freezing my butt off. Spending 5 days at Disney Paris will be great, but we'll be outdoors all day everyday.

I'm going to get some decent thermals tomorrow and give them a proper testing on Saturday. If they work all good, if they don't there's a decent independent mountaineering/outdoor shop that sells all the major brands, CG, Fjallraven, RAB, North Face and a million others I've never of.

Well that’s debatable and very much depends on which jacket. They have dozens of fashion jackets but only 3-4 “proper” jackets, all of which would be way too warm for UK winters IMO.

The main problem I find with Canada Goose jackets is that they are heavy. Perfect for when you nead something that can put up with you dragging around large tools and drilling mud, not so great when you’re popping to the shops to buy some milk. I guess that’s where the fashion jackets came from.

Canada Goose is as much a real deal as North Face and most of the other outdoor brands.

OP, got an Ellis Brigham near you? They usually have a lot of good stuff right up your street.

Sadly browsing their latest line up seems a lot more fashion oriented lines - few years back it was much more technical predominantly.
