After HP logo I have massege on black screen:

SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Drive 4 (samsung HM121Ht(S1))
Warning: Replace HDD a Failure may be imminent!
Press F1 to continue (after I Press, nothing happens)

so, I guess I must change HDD than?
Can I use any Laptop's HDD?

Also,I do not have warranty, as 1 year past and I used it anyway!
Ony one good point, that I back'd up to my external HDD 40gb of different files!

Id be very surprised if it was IDE. Your be able to tell by just looking at it. If you use a google image search to look at pictures of both then ud be able to tell with ease which one is which.

My GF's PC still says that two years on after the message started popping up.
We have everything backed up just in case however.

:D

Had a look and found 2 HDD's:

Toshiba MK3252GSX 2.5-inch 320GB Hard Disk Drive

or

Hitachi TravelStar 5K320 - hard drive - 320 GB - SATA-300 (HTS543232L9A300)

both under £50 (on sale)

so, which is better?
Thanks

Toshiba MK3252GSX 2.5-inch 320GB Hard Disk Drive

or

Hitachi TravelStar 5K320 - hard drive - 320 GB - SATA-300 (HTS543232L9A300)

I've found hitachi drives to be marginally slower on access time, although their read/write is generally very good, haven't had one fail on me yet either.

HI, thank you for replies!
I have contacted HP!

This is What the said:

From your E-mail, I understand that the Hard drive is failed on your notebook and displays error message "SMART Failure".
I would like to inform you that you can use the below configuration of Hard drives that are compatible with your notebook:

Hard drive: Serial ATA (SATA) 9.5-mm, 2.5-inch hard drives

Single hard drive configurations:

1. 250-GB, 5400-rpm
2. 200-GB, 4200-rpm
3. 160-GB, 5400-rpm
4. 120-GB, 7200- and 5400-rpm
5. 100-GB, 7200-rpm
6. 80-GB, 5400-rpm

Dual hard drive configurations:

1. 500-GB, 5400-rpm (250 GB × 2)
2. 400-GB, 4200-rpm (200 GB × 2)
3. 320-GB, 5400-rpm (160 GB × 2)
4. 280-GB, 5400-rpm (160 GB + 120 GB)
5. 240-GB, 7200-rpm (120 GB × 2)
6. 240-GB, 5400-rpm (120 GB x 2)
7. 200-GB, 7200-rpm (100 GB × 2)
8. 200-GB, 5400-rpm (120 GB + 80 GB)

When you try to install Operating system into a single 3320GB hard drive you may error messages like the hard drive cannot be loaded and it may or may not reflect total 320GB capacity. However, it is detected in the BIOS also.

I guess NO, only if 250+250=500gb in DUAL mode!

Also: thay give me link where 250GB hardrive costs £160 EXCL VAT.

I mean in OCUK I can buy under £55!:rolleyes:

You'll be able to save the data on that disk, SMART is warning of a potential error. Also the disk itself may have a 3 year warranty so all may not be lost.

What, so you can't use a hard drive over 250gb?

I believe that is just because the system board only has SATA1, not SATA2 controller. I think 320GB is the largest SATA1 drive you can get, but looks like the controller might be unstable with it, hence the 250GB limit per disk.

HP service is a bit of noob tho!

guess I will be able to install VISTA ULTIMATE 32bit?
or better XP, as I read revies that laptops run better with HP..?

(I had Home premium)
