Vista, DX10 hardware and drivers to blame

As you may have read, there was a rumor and some reports about a DirectX 10 patch for Gas Powered Games' famous RTS, Supreme Commander. A new info on the developer's offical message board has revealed that there will be no such patch.

The post on the developer's message board reads: "The availability of DX10 hardware, final releases of Vista itself, and the solid drivers simply did not line up with the necessary time frames in our development cycle.", so they focused on graphical improvements that will benefit a far wider audience. You can find the post here .

There is also a v3251 patch released yesterday from Gas Powered Games's that includes a large number of game tweaks and balances, as well as several bug fixes and improvements.

You can get it from Gamespot here.
Good to see that DirectX 10 is taking off as planned. This, combined with the news that the DirectX 10 patch for Flight Simulator X still isn't ready, doesn't bode well at all. Also, where's this Company Of Heroes patch? :o

Link: Source.

Should this not be in PC Games forum?, anyway yes dosnt look like things are taking off anytime soon :o , at least not until Crysis + UT3 come out. Looks like Gas Powered are blaming Nvidia for the lack of Vista drivers etc :D

I wonder if it mostly because people with DX10 cards a largely still on XP?

I dont thinks its that becuase unless microsoft are lying they've said that vista has sold more copies than xp at launch and is beating it every month.

How many of those copies are for OEM systems though that won't even have a Dx10 card in them though?

Glad I stuck with XP and my X1900XTX....

Same here....

I wont be moving over to DX10 and Vista until the next range of DX10 cards is out.

I should hope they are selling more Vista than XP!

I mean all the people who haven't recently bought either, and are sticking with XP.

...or do you mean there has been more total sales of Vista than total sales of XP?

Hmmm, i wasnt sure if i cared enough to even post "i dont really care about DX10 patches. The game looks good enough to me".
I'm more bothered about how this reflects on the adoption of DirectX 10 in general as opposed to how good or bad it looks. ;) So far DirectX 10 is becoming vapourwear, so they need to get some titles out.

Im sure they will in time.

At the moment the far majority of gamers will have DX9 cards.
So developers have to ask themselves is it worth the effort of adding DX10 effects into their titles. For new titles it may be easier to implement straight off, without a great deal of extra effort & so be worthwhile to show off a some extra effects (i am no expert in this arera). For titles in development or allready released it may not be so high on the developers agenda (especially so for smaller production studios, who have less time, money & resources to play with).

I was never really expecting existing games to be patched to DX10 (except some MMOs eventually). Developers will generally develop for what is out there, at the moment that isn't DX10 systems. Give it time and then more and more games will come out supporting it but expect it to take a while to filter down. When I really expect to see it is when the DX10 game engines are released. Crysis engine, DX Unreal etc.
