With Asus latests P35 gaming boards, the Blitz Extreme and Blitz Formula, which are using an IDT chip to give you two x8 PCI Express slots instead of the normal x16 and x4 configuration of the P35 chipset, a problem has occured on the Asus FAQ.

It seems that the second slot is PCI Express 1.0/1.0a only and according to Asus, this older PCI Express standard isn't compatible with PCI Express 2.0.

The primary slot is PCI Express 1.1 and it doesn't have this problem as this version of PCI Express is compatible with the upcoming 2.0 standard.

So what's the significance of this? Well, it means that you won't be able to use newer PCI Express 2.0 cards with several motherboard, not just these ones, as if your board has a 1.0 or 1.0a PCI Express slot, a PCI Express 2.0 card won't work in those slots.

told ya so....

If this was X38 I would be worried, but if you have enough money to get 2 x 400 quid graphics cards, you'll get a X38 top of the range mobo, not a good value P35 board.

P35 chipset isn't supposed to be top of the range mobo, and dual graphics (SLi or Crossfire) is for top of the range mobos.

The primary slot should be, this is just talking about the 2nd slot from what i can make out, as it runs at 4x/8x or whatever it is, so this is only of real concern to anyone who wants to run Crossfire, if your only going to run 1x card then any motherboard will do, even a crossfire board, as you always use the primary slot for a single card, not the secondary, so the boards must have both specs i guess, primary slots on all boards must be 1.1, so will work with PCI-E 2 cards, the secondary slot must be the one that wont work as its only 1.0/1.0a.

So i don't know why they are trying to panic everyone here by saying this (which will panic quite a lot of ppl i guess as they aint mentioned Crossfire anywhere, and thats the only ppl it will affect, those who want to run 2x cards) :-

As above that they say the primary slot is fine :-

Indeed, I don't see the problem here. In order for it to be an issue:

1) You must be using 2 cards (crossfire/sli)
2) You must be using PCI-E 2.0 cards (which are will be very expensive in the short term)

People are not going to be cramming a pair of gf9s into ancient boards as they must be loaded to even consider such a setup.

Agreed.

ill assume my p5ne-sli isnt pcie-2 capable then

It is, all motherboards are PCI-E 2 capable, its only secondary slots on SLi/Crossfire boards that may not be PCI-E 2 capable, if you have an SLi/Crossfire board you can run a single PCI-E 2 card without issue, its only when wanting to go SLi/Crossfire with 2x cards where the issue may come into play, as the secondary slot may not be PCI-E 2 capable.

Ive got a DS4, my secondary slot only runs at 4x, so im guessing that won't be PCI-E 2 capable, doesn't mean i have to get a new motherboard though, as a single PCI-E 2 card will run fine, as single cards use the primary slot.

AFAIK PCI-E 2 is 5gb speed, and your shot "only" states 2.5gb, so i don't think so? Can't explain the version though :)

I'm sure if the 9800GTX is PCI-E 2.0 and doesn't work with the PCI-E 1 slots they will create a bridge chip or something to make it compatible

why sell a small bridge chip for £20-30 when they can sell brand new motherboards for £150

scummy developers

yes indeed... that exactly my point since everybody is talkin about G92... Thinking that computer developers are friendly people that doesnt like money...
So mostly of us will have to upgrade mobo in order to enjoy G92, unless they come up with a G92 PCIe1
