If you have the TomTom app on your iOS device and upgrade to iOS5, you will not be able to restore any of the in-app purchases such as voices, traffic etc.

Here's the text of my convo with TomTom customer services.

Luela (UK) (Listening)

Luela (UK): Hi, my name is Luela (UK). How may I help you?

Me: Hi

Me: I replaced my iPhone4 with an iPhone4S and I'm not able to restore my traffic subscription.

Me: I keep getting an error telling me my password is wrong.

Me: It isn't wrong.

Me: I know 100% that it's not wrong.

Me: I even reset it through the website.

Luela (UK): I understand that you have updated to the iod5.

Luela (UK): Kindly confirm that I have understood your query correctly.

Me: Well yes, it's not possible to have an iPhone 4S that doesn't have iOS5.

Me: I bought a new device, it has iOS5.

Luela (UK): Please be assured, I will do my best to give you all possible information regarding this.

Me: Thank you.

Luela (UK): Apple have just relaesed iOS 5 and there are some compatibility issues with the new platform that is affecting log-in issues with the HD Traffic service .

Luela (UK): The current Navigator 1.8 for iPHone was designed for compatibilty with iOS 4.

Me: Okaaay

Me: I'm paying for a service which I'm not getting.

Luela (UK): The next version of the Navigator appliaction 1.9 is currently under final testing and is due for release in the near future.

Me: It's not possible to run an iPhone 4S with iOS4

Luela (UK): Once this is released we can as gesture of goodwill compensate you for the period that you are unable to access the HD Traffic service

Me: A timescale is more important - When is 1.9 due for release because this is badly affecting me

Luela (UK): I am sorry but at this moment in time we do not yet have an exact release date .

Luela (UK): Once this is released we can as gesture of goodwill compensate you for the period that you are unable to access the HD Traffic service

Me: Any indication as to whether it'll be days, weeks?

Me: Can I ask why this wasn't picked up during beta testing? iOS5 has been available to developers for some time.

Luela (UK): weeks.

Luela (UK): I am sorry but I did not receive your response. Would you please send it again?

Me: Can I ask why this wasn't picked up during beta testing? iOS5 has been available to developers for some months.

Luela (UK): The next version of the Navigator appliaction 1.9 is currently under final testing

Me: OK, well I guess at least I've got a rough timescale. This is going to affect me badly though because going weeks without a service (a very good service) that I've come to rely on is going to be difficult.

Me: Thank you for your answer.

Luela (UK): I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Luela (UK): Is there anything else, I can help you with today?

Me: No, that's all.

Luela (UK): Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer support. You have a great day ahead!

Me: Bit of a double ended sword that, I won't have a great couple of weeks due to the software problems but I appreciate your gesture.

Luela (UK): Thank you for the appreciation.

Luela (UK): It is a wonderful experience to assist a customer like you.

Luela (UK): Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer support. You have a great day ahead!

Luela (UK) has disconnected.

well that sucks, appreaciate they can't test all the apps, but tom tom is pretty well known, and surely they could check the top 50 apps or so for beta testing ?

From reading the TomTom support forums, it looks as this was picked up by the testers as soon as iOS5 hit the developers but TomTom haven't rolled out a fix yet.

It's very frustrating, I rely on that traffic subscription every day and to be without it for "weeks" is going to cause problems.

I wonder what people done before Sat Navs were released? :)

The issue probbley did get flagged up when they were testing iOS5, but sometimes it can take months for a fix to be implemented.

I remember when the Iphone 4 came out, and it wasnt compatiable with the carkit, it took TomTom a while to release a bumper which allowed the user to use a Iphone 4 with the car cradle.

I used to have a box of maps in the car, I'd buy streetmaps of every town I went to for work and soon built up a good collection. When I worked in the west end of London, I soon learned my way around!

But in this case, it's not the satnav that's the problem, it's the traffic. The TomTom traffic is so accurate that it just feels wrong to be driving without that little green (or amber/red) square in the top right corner.

I agree - If it wasn't for the single word "weeks" I could have been talking to a bot. Oh, and the sarky bit at the end.

The new skobbler app is free until Wednesday with options to download the UK map for offline use very cheaply.

Might be worth a look as an alternative for now.

Thanks for the headsup but how does that help with traffic reports? TomTom works perfectly except it's not possible to restore the in-app purchases, ie HD Traffic.

Whilst it seems a pretty poor effort on TomTom's part given the beta period, its not overly surprising given its a new software version/device. Plenty of apps on my 4S seem to have various gremlins in them currently.

Without wishing to sound patronising (and I'm sure you know what I'm about to say!), upgrading on Day 1 is always risky be it an iphone, android or windows etc. and it seems like you've been burnt by it this time.

Pretty poor from TomTom considering the beta has been out for months! Hopefully the update will come sooner rather than later...

Feel your pain, don't know how I survived before traffic-aware satnav. Tis rather poor that it wasn't picked up and fixed prior to the release of iOS5 considering how long it's been available to developers.

Upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS5 and HD Traffic appears to be working great, shows the correct end date in the "TomTom Shop" and I didnt need to restore anything.

1.9 also includes:

- An iPad specific interface (presumably that would work on a wifi iPad with a tethered iPhone?)
-Latest maps
-Improved interface

This is the last version that will fully support the iPhone 3G.
