Warranty Woes

when the daughter had her zaphira i replaced the front springs 3 times always after going over speed humps ...yes yes i know i told her but thats what dads have to do ....service and be a bank for kids grrrr

And the main dealer services at Skoda used to tell me they took the wheels off the car and all sorts but they don't, otherwise they'd be spending about 4 hours per car per service. They'd have had a cursory glance if you're lucky.
If they do the same as VW they do take the wheels off, got a health check video of my mum's car first service and all four wheels were off it. There was nothing to advise other than all good as the car had only done 5k ish

Well if they ever did on any of the occasions they serviced my vRS they did a bloody good of removing and refitting without disturbing even a tiny bit of the dirt on the wheels :p

Hey all!

I will start with I know very little about cars other than basics.

Basically I have had an MOT fail on a snapped spring, fair enough these things happen with the state of our roads but I have warranty that wont cover it, in spite of them covering springs, as they deem it wear and tear.

My argument to them was that I had a service less than a month ago and the springs were never mentioned so I would deem it as a sudden failure but alas they will not budge.

How long are springs "supposed" to last for?
It could have broke yesterday, springs usually last a long time depending on state of the roads where u r. They really are a service item and I don't think any warranty company's will cover them, best practice is to get both replaced and a full check on steering geometry,

I could fully understand they are a service item its the fact the warranty company specifically states they cover the springs. If they don't cover it snapping what do they cover it for? If the whole suspension goes maybe?

Can only say my experience when we had the Golf. After 3 years warranty with VW.

Both front springs snapped while in the lakes. Replaced under warranty.

Year later back one goes, under warranty.

The other one I pointed out was very corroded (no mot advisory my simple observation)

This was fine to them and not covered under warranty. So I got my local indie to change it for less than the cost of my excess.

There's not much logic when it comes to this sort of thing. I would be asking the company what they cover on the spring specifically. As you say, it may be if other components have failed they reaplce that as well. Seems unlikely.

They will probably cover the spring for sudden failure. If the spring has failed due to corrosion it’s not sudden failure.

Edit I’d also expect them to have a clause in their terms which states they don’t cover corrosion, blockages, water ingress and accident damage.

If your spring snapped because you hit a pothole that would be classed as accident damage.

At OP, how old is the car? If under 3 then maybe it wouldn't be classed it's wear and tear.

Otherwise you're going to just have to accept that a spring can go at any time without it being visible prior to it going. And also assume that mechanics don't do 50% of the checks they say they do.

So they changed it outside of the 3 year warranty in the first instance?

Yeah lesson learnt - I need to find a local mechanic I can trust.

Car is just over 5 years old and serviced every year. Low miles.

At 5 years old it probably is classed as wear and tear for moderns cars unfortunately.

Good luck finding a mechanic you can trust, it's probably (definitely) easier to learn how to check yourself!
