Was Superunknown the best grunge album?

definitely wasnt nirvana. they sucked quite hard.

Soundgarden are awesome. i guess they're kinda grungey(ish)

Chris Cornell's possibly the best singer (aside from Maynard) of this era too. he has an amazing voice.

Chris Cornell is possibly the best rock singer of all time! He's certainly up there. I rate him above Vedder, though I loved his voice too. Hunger strike is one of my all time favourite songs - brings tears to my eyes hearing those two sing together!

Superunknown is one of my favourite grunge albums, but I think it's a little too 'progressive' in terms of rhythm and melody to be the best grunge album - you'd have to go for a safer choice such as vs (pearl jam), dirt (alive in chains - although might be a little too heavy) or even nevermind - it was the defining moment in grunge no matter how hard we might try to ignore it!

I was listening to Superunkown last night, had forgotten quite how good an album that was. Also tried some of the earlier STP stuff which is rather good as well. Personally I rate In Utero more than Nevermind.

No :)

Temple of the dog wins that accolade for me :) Stunning album, mmm pearl Jam Plus Chris cornell.

In Utero is up there, but that is the only Nirvana album i'd even put in the same league as anything released by the other 3 main grunge bands.

Ten and Vs are great albums, Dirt is brilliant (as are all of alice in Chains albums) Jerry Cantrell's solo stuff is as good as if not better than much alice in chains IMO as well.

Soundgarden are one of my all time favourite bands, been listening to them since I bought Louder Than Love when it was released. Badmotorfinger and Superunknown are both great, it's actually hard for me to pick one of those as better than the other but if you forced me to choose at gunpoint I'd probably pick Superunknown :)

I never really rated Nirvana to be honest, I like the albums but don't think they're as good as everyone seems to think and as for Pearl Jam they seemed to go a bit odd after Vs, haven't really listened to them since.

Temple of the Dog was a great album, haven't listened to that for a while but Hunger Strike, awesome song.

I'd agree there too. PJ were at their peak on vs, but after that vitalogy was also cool in a removed kind of way, but I liked it. When no code came out it was a dissapointment for me, and after that they lost me totally. Shame really. But hey, thanks for 3 amazing records! BTW, they are coming over in the summer and playing some very small venues...

I don't know if Soundgarden were grunge as such, but Superunknown was definitely one of the best rock albums of the 90's without a doubt. There's not a weak track on it and Like Suicide is one of my favourite songs ever (the acoustic version on Songs from the Superunknown is awesome too).

Some of the early wildhearts stuff was pretty grunge(ish) which i rate pretty highly, but like a lot of other people here i rate soundgarden over nirvana.
