Was Superunknown the best grunge album?

people only slate nirvana because they were so popular.

just admit it, nirvana had some quality music. people just dismiss it because loads of 12year olds like them thinking they are great.

im sorry but i admit i like a bit of nirvanas stuff.

i like soundgardens stuff too... but imo from that era i preferred pearl jam

Oh I didn't say I didn't like them, I just don't think they're as good as everyone believes them to be, far too much hype.

No. I slate Nirvana because they were completely unmitigated tripe.

No they didn't

No, I dismiss it because it is awful. Truly awful

I don't mind Nirvana but I don't personally don't rate them that highly. They have a few good tracks spread across a number of albums but the rest is just pap.

Only really good thing to come out of them...Dave Grohl.

I'd agree there too. PJ were at their peak on vs, but after that vitalogy was also cool in a removed kind of way, but I liked it. When no code came out it was a dissapointment for me, and after that they lost me totally. Shame really. But hey, thanks for 3 amazing records! BTW, they are coming over in the summer and playing some very small venues...

PJ playing this year!!!!??/ Got any more info mate? :D

Superunkown is not a grunge record to me.
Close to one of the best albums of the decade though and for me Soundgarden's peak.

Badmotorfinger thats the best grunge album Soundgarden had. Jesus Christ Pose drumming and Room a Thousand Years Wide, topped off with Mind Riot, interstellar!

Alice In Chains, the daddies of grunge for me, Cantrell's style of playing still sounds like grunge music even today in his solo stuff. AIC - Dirt is my nomination for best grunge album.

Cant believe no one mentioned Stone Temple Pilots yet either, Core is another fantastic album of grunge times gone by, as is their entire back catalogue. Velvet who?

I could quite happily rant on about STP all night, one of my fav grunge bands along with AIC.

Both band's earlier work is just incredible, the early/mid 90's was a great time for rock music in general, so much more so than what's going on these days. A lot of bands made some pioneering movements in music back then whereas now I don't really know where things are headed.

Damn! This thread takes me back.

It just happens I have Damn that River by Alice in Chains on right now! I loved the whole grunge scene. Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden were awesome back in the early 90s. Was it really that long ago? :(

Yep, really takes me back too. There's almost like a romaticism about the grunge movement back in the early 90's with the stragley hair, ripped jeans and shirts etc that will never be had again. The album art and the style of the videos too when MTV was still in its infancy is really nostalgic, and almost unrecognisable now.

I remember buying BadMotorFinger, Superunknow, Ten, Dirt and Core on the day of release...along with most of the follow up albums...blimey I feel old now ;)

Interesting stuff. Just back from the pub, so excuse my typo's and suchlike.

Mostly the grunge *mentions* here start from early 90's.

Many *actual* Grunge artists acknowledge Kings X (mid to late 80's) as the fathers of Grunge and are influenced by them, nope, no high tech video from them, in fact they have an out of character Christian background and many of the early lyrics reflect this.

Throw into the mix Doug coming out of the closet and admiting he was Gay, and the band with thier old fashioned views, well .... basicaly dealing with it .... Well you have an inovative band indeed.

Seems hardly anyone here has heard of Kings X before and how significant they were in changing things (to Grunge) for sure, they never had a total Grunge album, but it doesent work like that, innovation starts with experimental songs, Kings X did that with *Grunge Music*, then follows a period of word to mouth, then ... OMG, that sounds brilliant.

And before you know it .......

I will say to the person on this thread whom mentioned, Niel Young as the Father of Grunge? he came close, utmost respect for that guy, maybe Kings X followed in his footsteps? I'm sure they admired him .... but that wasent Grunge as we know it, that Crown goes to Kings X.

Perhaps the most understated rock band ever.

All IMHO of course.

Why does everyone talk about Nevermind as Nirvana's definitive album?

Nevermind was hugely sucessful and really well known, but it wasn't really grunge, it was a lot of pop melodies just covered with distorted guitar, even the band admitted that.

Nirvana only ever released 2 grunge albums - Bleach, then In Utero. The rest of their albums weren't grunge, they were a different path, but they were a grunge band originally, so the tag came over into the mainstream with them.

The best grunge band award has to fall at the feet of Dinosaur Jr, they were the original grunge band. Neil young was a very, very heavy influence on grunge, yes, but he wasn't grunge.
