Okay, well in a totally out of character, spur of the moment decision, I decided to buy a 2011 iMac 27" for £740 off gumtree. It's the one with the 2.7Ghz i5 CPU, to replace my main, windows rig. I've been using OS X on one of my laptops for a while and have liked it, but wasn't planning on getting a desktop just yet.
Anyway, my instincts told me it was a good deal, but I didn't have time to shop around. I've had a look at prices now, and it seems I did alright, but what do you guys think?

That'll be one of these..

Yes, it's a good price. Yours will come with 4Gb RAM, it's very cheap to upgrade it to 8Gb,

Alright, you think you did alright, you did brilliantly!

Half the price almost.

London Looters (Y).
The guy who sold it to me was a quite, polite asian guy in his late 50s and brought his family along, so I doubt it :p

Yeah, I saw that but I wasn't sure if the second hand value was a lot less?
:o STUNNING price, need I say more.

Very jealous :)
That's what I wanted to hear :D Thanks

Jammy bugger. :p I should check Gumtree more often. On a spur of the moment I searched the other day looking for the discontinued Ikea Jerker desk and there was only 1 return near me which was sold only days prior.

I think it depends a lot on area as well - living in London there's always going to be far more people with stuff for sale, so the chances of getting lucky are higher.
Exactly :) You could probably offer him £800 and he'd take it as well. The one I went for was up for £1100 originally, I offered him £800 which he accepted, and as he didn't have the original mouse and keyboard I knocked him down to £740 on the doorstep.
Yes it was a very good price so do not talk of it again or our jealousy may snap and we will shun you from the mac community.
:D
Say no more :p

I'm North coast of Northern Ireland, so they're definitely few and far between up here. I'd probably have more success if I lived closer to Belfast.

Gumtree concerns me, this looks too good to be true. Therefore if it is genuine, he's doing himself out of a sale by selling too cheaply!

I immediately question adverts that don't have an actual picture of the product and just use stock pictures. Even before reading the advert. I'll skip them on the listing page. Same with eBay.

Hate is such a strong word :( why can't i get bargains like this
Anyone can if they're observant enough. So far I've got a macbook for £100, macbook pro for £100, 400w sound system for £10, another macbook pro for £200, and that's just the ones I can remember off the top of my head - I buy stuff pretty much every week. It's always nice to get a bit of extra cash for very little effort.

I spend quite a lot of time in the west of ireland and buying anything online is near impossible. I always have to go to Galway for anything IT-related.

That is most likely a scam. he says he'll only meet and take cash to make the buyer feel secure, but when emailed will say he's been called away unexpectedly and he'll post it if you pay via BT. You can guess what happens then.

Depends what you're looking to do. They're pretty quick machines for fairly basic stuff, but if you're going to be encoding or batch processing files then I'd spend a bit more. They can be upgraded massively (think they can take 32gb ram) but a lot of upgrades are expensive. For £135 though I'd say it's a good deal - you could easily get more than that if you sold it on.
