As the title suggests I'm interested in hearing everyones opinion.

First, my opinion. Having watched every second of every race in 2012 and then read numerous internet discussions throughout the year, I considered Fernando Alonso to be the stand out driver in 2012. I believe, Fernando was consistantly better than Vettel in 2012. I say this because the Ferrari did not have the pace in qualifying to land pole unlike the redbull. So Fernando was often starting mid field and having to drive his way to the front. He did this consistantly throughout the season. When you compare Fernado's starting position to his finish position, no other driver gained more places over the course of the season.

Vettel however, had the benefit of a quick car. A car that often stuck him on pole, but not always, granted. Vettel spent a lot more time in clean air than Fernado and had a lost less risky overtakes to do throught 2012.

So, I'm saying that although Vettel got enough points to win the DC in 2012, in my opinon, the stand out driver, who I feel should have won based on his achievments given the car he had, was Fernando Alonso.

I'd also like to add that I'm a Lewis Hamilton fan, but I didn't want to mention him as he had 6 DNF's. Even though none of them were his fault !

Mark Webber also had a "quick car", where did he finish in the championship?

As a team, Red Bull won it.

As a driver, Alonso edged it.

However, I think Helmut Marko's comment about Alonso involving himself with politics was fair. No need to say he is racing Newey's team. He's racing Red Bull.

Also, don't like how Ferrari can break a gearbox seal and its tactical but Red Bull change ratio's and it's cheating. I always say this.

And this is coming from a hard core Vettel fan.

alonso deserves nothing.

he cried about his car so much people assume it was a crapbox yet even massa was more competitive at the end of the season....

Didnt actually fight his way up the field but inherited a large portion of his points from others failing to finish.

sounds like a true deserving champion

I thought Alonso, Vettel and Hamilton all drove superbly in 2012 and they all would have deserved it. Just some had more luck than others....

Quite simply if the Red Bull was so much better than the Ferrari, but Alonso is so much better than Vettel why wouldn't Red Bull sign Alonso for next year and tie up the WCC and 1 and 2 within the first half of the season, also truly displaying the truly better driver?

TBH the final race alone shows Vettel's true ability to race from within the field, not just from the front. Yes Alonso displayed an outstanding performance over the whole season compared to many others but there was many races where he let himself down, races where a few extra points could have meant the championship. I think there was a few races (when he was leading the championship) where he played it safer than he would have done had he been in second place for example.

Bring on next season and lets hope no car outshines the others too much :)

Alonso put on an outstanding performance for 2/3rd of the season. In the final 3rd of the year he was consistently outperformed by Massa. A driver nobody would put in the top 5, or maybe even the top 10 on the grid had to be held back by his team in order for Alonso to even keep Vettel in his sights.

Of course Vettel deserved it, and he actually had to fight for it this year, unlike last year. That's not to say that he was the best driver, but he made the most of what he had when it mattered, and that's enough.

"Even Massa" who came within 5 seconds of winning the world title in the past. The same Massa who finished with less than half of the points of Alonso. Massa might have finished the season strongly, but he was utterly humiliated by Alonso again.

Didnt actually fight his way up the field but inherited a large portion of his points from others failing to finish.
So he (generally) kept out of trouble. Something Kimi was lauded for this season. I doubt he'll ever come to terms with the shame.

He finished first in the championship, so yeah he pretty much deserved it.

Surely this thread should be "Are you happy Vettel was the winner in 2012" and to that I would answer no, I would have been happier if Alonso/Hamilton/Raikonnen had won
