Was WoW the ultimate MMO?

This is where you have to have something to compare it to to give any value to it. I think the customisation is very poor compared to say SWG. Most level 70 characters are running round in near enough the same items which the same talent specs.

What a ridiculous stipulation to make. To ask the question about WoW's place within MMO history and to discuss the matter fully neccesitates comparison. Everything is good or bad compared to something else.

No, because what im ending up with is "SWG pre CU" how does that tell me there unbiased opinion of WoW?

I dont want replies like "SWG pre CU is better then wow end of" because thats not what i asked.

Please, by asking if its the ultimate mmorpg you have to compare it to all the others out there. Surely, not comparing it against others is creating a biased opinion of WoW? Or are you just a WoW fanboy that wants to hear how great your crappy game is?

And in answer to your question, no it is not!! It is a childish game, and entry level training mmorpg into the huge world of MMORPG's.

Considering what WoW has to offer:

Freedom to roam - So do the majority of mmorpgs
Polish - i thought it was english :D
Huge open land - not really.
Easy to learn combat - too bloody easy, just a case of clicking icons. boring.
Massive amounts of customization - honestly a bad thing, gives unfair advantages
Good PvP - HAHAHAHAHA

Have to agree, no MMO since has been worth playing cos they all suck in comparison. Whish I never played SWG.

SWG pre cu was one of the amazing games, and its skill tree urinates all over the skills trees of WoW. But, SWG was a star wars 3D version of Ultima Online, which is IMHO is still the ultimate mmorpg.

EVE has to be the best modern equivalent of Ultima, unlimited potential, constant updates and changes etc. A real adult mmorpg.

Probably yes

It has thousands of quests and an end game featuring some great dungeons or intense PVP, but better than that it's well supported/updated and perfected with Blizzard polish. The kind of polish that only a company like Blizzard can apply. Well them and Valve.

If WOW was released today in the same condition it was in 2005 then I doubt it will be the biggest MMO. I think Conan and Warhammer will do what WOW does and a bit more too, but who knows.

Surely the point of a mmorpg is that it doesn't have an 'end game'?

It gets rather boring doing the same quests/raids and once you hit lvl 70 where is there to go?

lol @ wow
Ultima Online is pure freedom. Nothing else comes close, none of this forced leveling/bots garbage. Just freedom to work on your skills at your own pace.

UO was skillsbased like SWG was it not? If so that's the best way to do things imo and I wish more MMOs did it like that.

(Lol someone else has seen kung pow ^^)

First it would be nice to not insult people, this is after all the PC gaming section, i'd like to think mature people reside here.

Secondly, if you have read my posts in this section, you'll know im in the general beta of Age of Conan. To add to that i havent played wow since November last year.

Though i really dont see a reason to prove my self to you.

Apart from the complete inability for the new player to get involved and the patches which crash your computer.

UO was skill based as was SWG I'm told. Skill based games were the best thing for MMO's, unfortunately they required constant tweaking and fixing compared to the easier to produce leveling games.

Daoc was the best modern day 3D MMO I've come across, before that went downhill with Trials of Atlantis. WoW simply copied bits off Daoc and EQ UI wise.

I apologise to you, however, it was the game I was calling crappy, not you :p

Honestly, I can't say I have read anything about AoC due to the fact that I never bother with betas. Something great in beta can be twisted into a steaming pile of poo upon release and vica versa.

I believe there was one patch, with was a major overall/addon (that was free I would like to add) that caused major problems with crashing. As for new players, they get more help as time goes on. Better tutorials, more XP on starting, and it really does take no time at all to get into if the person is prepared to ask a few questions and read a few bits and pieces.

It has a much more complex skill tree than other mmorpgs and real time training instead of the grind that comes with most games including SWG/Ultima.

To me time based skills are game breaking in a way at least with exp for killing and quests someone can catch another person up if they grind more or play more,in eve if you got a player with 4 years of skills and another player 1 year of skills there isn't really any chance of that player catching the other player up unless the 4 year person stops playing.
How does a newbie get into a top guild in eve? with most mmo's it would be with lvl's and exp(how good you are) and keys, with eve what is it? down to skills which can take years to be in a top guild?.

No, I wouldn't play it today. No, it isn't the ultimate MMO.

No death penalty, easy progression and a stupid community. I was bored and annoyed by the time I hit 40.

There are several pirate corps (guild), one I know of started out with new characters flying frigates (the basic ships) and they managed to do very well for themselves using knowledge and team work. When you see a bunch of noobs take down an 'experienced' player it realyl makes you chuckle.

yes, you can never catch up with the XP points of someone that has been playing for years. However, it means you have to rely on your own knowledge and corp mates to make the fight even :D

Ultima online was the best...

An MMO should allow you to do certain things:

Kill people, anyone you want in non-guarded areas.
Have less structure in quests - e.g. a rumour goes round the land about some awsome thing you can get - you round up a crew and go find it using your own intelligence to findclues / fight foes along the way - also if you are locked into battle, ppl should be able to walk past and see you fighting, and intefere if they wish.

There needs to somehow be more skill involed in mmo combat, so a low level, skillful player can stand a chance vs a high level one.

Players should be able to make their own quests for others to do.

It should be difficult to become a master in many fields.... e.g. very few people can become a michael angelo /leo da vinci.

Basically MMOs should take more elements from real life but allow people to virtually experience things tgey cannot nessecerly in real life.

Everybody, no matter how small or new to the game should feel a sense of importance.

btw... ive never played wow, but i assume its restricted in ways i wouldnt appreciate.

Thx i never played in a top guild in eve as i not played it for long enough i just wondered how they get new members as the skills are timed based and if that mattered that much as you would have a smaller pool to pick from beening time based skill instead of lvl and keyed based.
