Hi,

Just about to buy a replacement washer as ours died today after 8 years of decent service. I called Boots Electricals , who appear to have the best prices, to check some things out and whilst the guy was going over costings he was trying to sell the usual break down cover / insurance.

It was £5.30 a month and will apparently cover all labour, parts etc etc and if the machine needs to be replaced then they will replace with a new like for like machine, up to eight years from now.

I usually say no to all of this, but I did wonder how 1st year manufacture warranties work with washers? If there is any fault should they cover all costs of labour and parts etc? If so it seems a bit daft to buy this cover in its first year of ownership?

The policy was with Domestic General Insurance and looking on their website it appears you can buy washer cover for an already existing washer for just £3.25 a month. So it looks like Boots is adding quite a margin onto the policy and I could just go direct to them after my first year?

My current view is not to buy this sort of thing, but would be interested to hear others thoughts or experiences.

Cheers

HaHa or a Hotpoint.

only ever had problems with hotpoint/hoover myself... never again!

we bought a lovely hotpoint with a large drum a few years back i think it was a 9kg one we got it home for it to fail on the first wash...

after telling hotpoint the serial codes etc they informed us the washing machine contained a circuit board that was known to be faulty... rather than do a recall they decided to just fit the newer version circuit board for anyone who purchased the model of washer

we waited 4 weeks! FOUR WEEKS! because the part wasnt in stock WTF! finally they decided just to replace the whole broken washing machine with a brand new off the factory floor one already fitted with the newer revision circuit board

we did not recieve any form of compensation , no apology nothing i will never buy anything from that company for the rest of my life

The terms of the manufacturer warranty can vary - you will have to read them.

For the first six months you are well-covered by the Sale of Goods
Act 1979 and should be able to take it back to Boots for a replacement or repair at their cost. After six months you are still covered, but you would have to prove it was faulty when you bought it which is more difficult.

If you pay by credit card then you will be also covered by section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 meaning you have an additional claim against the credit card company.
