Washing machine electric shock!

Hi all,
My zwd1262w washer dryer is playing up.
Over the last two or three washes I have noticed that some of my clothes have 'light brown/tan' marks on them AFTER having washed them.

Then yesterday I went to unload the washing machine and got quite a shock from it. If you hold your finger on the metal drum you can feel the small current passing through it! Is that normal, I assume not!

Any ideas what could be wrong please?

Thanks,

Jon :)

Well it seem you are not quite 100% forum dependant, you think right its not 'normal'. And to guess at the problem I would say its somehow shorting?

:).

I'm going to take it to bits, however I wanted to know if anyone knew of any components that I should check for.

I noticed the 'shock' stopped happening after about 15 mins of the washer stopping its cycle. could it be water related?

I hope I don't die.

Check the interference filtering capacitor/diodes (live in a small round container type thing, first place the wires go when they go into the machine) with a multimeter , to see if there is continuity between + and Ground (Earth).

Before you open up the machine to do that, check the wiring from the machine, and the wiring in the socket/fuse point for an earth fault.

My Zanussi washer/drier zapped me a few times thanks to a loose earth wire in the socket I was using. 30 seconds with a screwdriver soon sorted that out.

I have no multimeter, ****. can I use something else perhaps, a spoon maybe?

Thanks for your help - I may invest in one if I need to

Burning clothes though, thats whats doing my head in. I guess its burning?! It is not poo, thats quite for sure.

Ive heard rubbing a fork on your knee while licking the contacts works - if your socks catch fire then there is a fault.

If you hold a lightbulb between your teeth when you touch the drum it should help you locate the problem.

You got a shock from the machine because there is a fault with the earthing. If the machine develops an earth fault then the escaping current should be able to flow away to earth, this is not happening so you really do need to get that sorted.
On top of that the machine has a fault that is allowing the current to get away. Favourite would be either of the heating elements or possibly the motor
The marks on the clothing could be oil/grease from the bearings.
The protective water seal covering the bearings on that model is pathetic, it only needs a relatively small build up of limescale/detergent sludge or a couple of clothing threads around it to make it fail, nightmare job to replace the bearings too, fiddly and time consuming.
You could not of chosen a tougher machine to try and fix yourself. The top comes off via two 7mm bolts at the rear top, after that you will need some skills as theres no rear panel, the cabinet splits in half after you remove about ten 8mm bolts, two are concealed behind plugs on the side bottom of cabinet. Take the rear half off as its miles easier than the front. If you get that far then have a good look at the wiring loom, its usually quite well bundled up but you never know. But without a meter of some description you are cream crackered with that fault.
