So I was just about to go to bed last night when I heard the sound of a Lancaster bomber overhead - turned out to be a huge wasp knocking around my bathroom. I killed it but as I have a mild phobia of wasps it took me ages to actually get to sleep.

Thing is, this is the second wasp I've had in the house this winter. I thought they were all hibernating in winter so why are they harassing me? Does this mean I have a wasps nest in my attic?

Orbit. Nuke them from it.

PS. I'd say you'd be likely to have a nest in the attic, and if you're semi/terraced/apartment it might be in the neighbours and finding a way through.

Looking on Wiki, it could have been a hornet - but they are supposed to die out in winter as well

WTB orbital nuke facility.

:\ was working in the loft the other day and got bombarded by a yellow and black death machine, came down from between the roofing felt. I had been wondering the same thing

Any wasps you see right now are early Queens.
You're right in that as a rule you don't see them this early, however a few usually "come out" early in the hunt for a new place for a nest.

Any wasp you kill now will be a queen and by doing so you'll in effect be killing off a whole nest before it even started.

I blame Global Warming too. I mean, where have Bumble Bee's gone? When I was a kid there were tons of them, and now all we get are pesky wasps. I loved Bee's, they were cute and furry and never stung even if you found one with its left wing broken off so when it'd take to the air it would fly around in constant circles.

go to the country side there are loads of them.

To OP; there was no need to kill the thing just cos' it's in your vicinity. RIP

I hope you're not serious. What else could I do? Letting it go outside would have killed it anyway - there was a frost last night, plus it would run the risk of me being stung, which is unacceptable.
