Awesome news!

Many sourcs of course, but I'll go with PC gamer.

Wasteland 2 was a big success for inXile Entertainment. Fans of isometric, party-based post-apocalyptica threw nearly $3 million at it on Kickstarter, and were rewarded with an old-timey RPG that, while not perfect, left most of them pretty happy with the results. Today the studio announced that a follow-up, Wasteland 3, is in the works, and that a new crowdfunding campaign, this one on Fig (inXile boss Brian Fargo is on the Fig advisory board), will kick off on October 5.

Wasteland 3 will be set in the “savage lands of frozen Colorado,” and will once again confront players with difficult moral choices and sacrifices. It will expand upon its predecessor with vehicles, environmental dangers, a “revamped, more fluid action system,” and an upgradeable Ranger Base. It will also feature a new dialog tree system created by the writers of inXile's fantasy RPG Torment: Tides of Numenera.

“You start the game as the sole survivor of Team November, a Ranger squad dispatched to the icy Colorado wastes,” inXile said. “This is a land of buried secrets, lost technology, fearsome lunatics, and deadly factions. No one here has ever heard of the Desert Rangers. Your reputation is yours to build from scratch, and your choices may save this land or doom it.”

Probably the biggest change to Wasteland 3 in terms of gameplay is the addition of multiplayer support. InXile said “the core of Wasteland 3 will still be a rich single-player experience,” but players will also have the option of teaming up with a friend, each of them controlling their own squad of Rangers. Missions can be shared, or you can split up to cover more ground more quickly, and you'll also have the option to play solo when your friend is offline—which may not necessarily be good for all involved.

“By making the decision to include multiplayer early on in the process, we will be able to design a game that is true to the core principles of the Wasteland franchise and our studio. Wasteland 3 can be played as an offline, single-player game, and is built from the ground up with a focus on story and reactivity that makes no sacrifices to the multiplayer experience,” inXile said. “At the same time, co-op players will enjoy working together to change Wasteland 3’s highly reactive world… or finding ways to destroy what their friend has worked to accomplish.”

Also very interesting is that inXile has been working on the project with Nic and Chris Bischoff, the main guys at Stasis studio The Brotherhood, who created the "prototype screens" seen below. "We’re big fans of STASIS and we know the Brotherhood have a great talent for isometric games. It was a no-brainer to have our team collaborate with them for prototype content for Wasteland 3," Fargo explained. "We’ll continue to work with them as we move into full production, their artistic insights and inspirations have been helpful throughout this process."

The Wasteland 3 Fig campaign is seeking $2.75 million in backing, with equity investment (from accredited investors only) capped at $2.25 million.

Co-op, vehicles, Sign me up!

Wasteland 2 Director's cut is excellent

I couldn't get into it. I played for about 20 minutes and thought "meh" and never played it again. Might try again over Christmas.

That's pretty much what happened to me. Played it long enough to get the hang of it and something else more shiney got released that snared me away from getting beyond WL2's opening missions.

I think that's good and a 3 would be welcome.

However donning my cynics hat, did they not make enough money from 2 to fund this themselves? I like what crowdfunding had brought and helped be developed into the market but I'm getting a little cynical these days that no company wants to take a risk so we give them all the money and get no real benefit at the end.

Might just be me though :p

I was going to post the same when I saw the post yesterday, surely they made enough profit from Wasteland 2 (It was a £30 release) to fund a sequel? If not, why?

haha, I was interested in Wasteland 2 and was following it along, thinking of buying. But every time I checked the store page or the reviews it seemed to be an unfinished product.

I admit I haven't checked in a while, but that was the story when I looked into it last time. And now this news. Looks like I will never play wasteland 2! :)

I own wasteland 2 : DE

Owned it on steam since 2014, never played - is it good?

Very good. You won't play an rpg as deep as this any time soon.

The base game is OK, but they released a director's cut that has a new engine and loads of tweaks that was much better imo. I'd highly recommend it.

Here is what I thought of W2-

I played the base game at release and found it disappointing, but a much needed facelift and lots of tweaking have greatly improved it.

Positives

- Great character creation and use of builds. You can create the characters you want with the skills you want and they are pretty much all useful, You create a squad of 4 Desert Rangers and it is really fun getting the right mix. The options in customisation are great too.
- Brilliant writing all the way through. The story is basic, but that is the point. It is just a framework for exploring and encountering all of the different factions and characters. The different stories and factions you encounter are brilliant.
- Meaningful choices and consequences. Practically every choice you make has a lasting consequence to it, some of them unexpected. It can be really small things like just talking to someone or opening a door, and it will bring up entirely new options. Really high quality, and in a time of dumbed down 'RPGs', very welcome. The ending slides are also really good.
- Interesting places to explore. Some really nice settlements with unique looks. Hollywood and Rodia are probably the best of them.
- Factions. The most impressive thing probably. At every settlement there are usually a few factions fighting for control and you get to work for/support whoever you want. They are all well thought out and interesting. My favourites are the Servants of The Mushroom Cloud and The Mannerites.
- Roleplaying. It is done brilliantly. From dialogue to skills(each member of your squad will have a specific skill and will have to be the ones to use it). You can pretty much do whatever you want(or nothing at all) with each quest. Everything can be resolved peacefully and you can even choose to side with the main bad guys and go against the Desert Rangers!...Best Roleplaying since New Vegas.
- Director's Cuts changes. Controller support is very well done ans suits teh game perfectly. New voice acting(though still not enough imo). New perks and skills are really good too. also the visuals were greatly improved. It is not the best looking game, but much better than before!...Also, combat is a thousand times better.
- Really good sense of progression. You feel like you are progressing the whole time, with plenty of new items and weapons coming along at regular intervals along with levelling up at the right pace. Never got bored, in fact I wanted more!
- Good selection of weapons and items with uses you have to really think about to utilize. It all adds to the sense of freedom and works really well. For example, I picked up a Hollywood walk of fame star at some point, then suddenly hours later I am in a small town and there is a hole in the perimeter fence, and the option comes up to patch it up with the star!
- Good maps with plenty to do and they are generally nice looking. They could be a bit more intricate though, and could maybe do with some verticality.
- Really good ending and last stretch of the game with an epic battle and some great choices.

Negatives

-Whilst the maps are good, a lot of them are underused. For example, you can have a random encounter against 2 robots that are right next to you, you kill them and then realize that there is a massive unused map with cover and everything. It really should be used for more.
- Quests can be overwhelming. Hollywood is a bit weird. The quests are are so intricate and well done that it kind of gets bogged down and can be a bit complicated. I imagine plenty of people will mess it up though no fault of their own by doing things in a strange order.
- Bugs. Lots of bugs, mainly related to how intricate the quests are, with some being hard to complete. Also instances of the wrong outcomes being played out too. Controller support, whilst great, can be a bit fiddly and just go wrong sometimes with you not being able to select certain skills.
- Companions, There are lots of companions you can recruit, which is good, and generally they are well implemented with a bit of unique dialogue, but they are all pretty useless otherwise. None of them really have any skills you need as you will most likely already have them covered, and they don't have quests or anything, though they do have some interesting moments.
- Whilst consequences are really good in the game, there is a general lack of interaction with people after you have completed their quest which is a bit disappointing to me.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the game, and would not hesitate to call it GOTY for me so far. Probably the best RPG I have played in years, or at least tied with Pillars of Eternity. A post apocalyptic wasteland is well realised and fun to explore with many interesting encounters. Loved it. 9/10

Edit- Actually, rereading this, I have to replay it now!

I played a lot of it during early access and when the game got fully released I couldn't be bothered to start again.
Since then I don't buy early access games!!!!

This does stink of: Why take the risk funding a game out of your profits, when you can make the consumer fund it for you?

I think so many companies are going this way, thinking it through they are basically getting to make their games completely free then pocketing all the profit. Zero to very little outlay then keep the profits.... stinks to me.

Started replaying WL2 because of this announcement and I'm hooked all over again! I Built a completely different squad(gone for an all female sword-wielding hitsquad!) this time and I'm going to be as bloodthirsty as possible.

Same here, I need to get on with it before this releases as this looks like it could be a great addition to the series, plus the new engine makes one hell of a difference, I'm loving the look of conversation scene from 0.39. I hope it's all to this standard.
