Hi everyone,

I have my Samsung 226BW connected up to my PS3 via DVI/HDMI connection and have set the display output to 720p..

However Blu-Rays do not seem to output at the correct resolution with big black bars at the top and bottom of the screen (DVDs are fine). Is there anyway to change this?

Thanks.

You've definitely set the PS3 to output at 720p?

Have you made sure that the TV is set to display a 1:1 picture and is not set to zoom, 16:9 or 4:3?

If it's a Sammy, pressing the info button on the remote should open a box on the screen that shows the current resolution and frequency of the signal you're displaying.

It's because the aspect ratio of the film is different to that of the screen. The only way to get full screen is on movies with a certain aspect ration (can't remember what it is off the top of my head but the orignal Spiderman uses it) or to use the controls on your monitor to zoom in - but that will be at a cost of some of the picture.

the Blu-Rays are displaying at the correct resolution, it's just cos the aspect ratio of the film is different to the aspect ratio of your screen

EDIT: beaten to it lol

Ok thanks guys.

Skippi the only option I can find is the DVD display which gives me an option of pan and scan and letterbox viewings....both give me black bars.

You can't change the aspect ratio of Blu-ray films, I don't think. So you'd have to have a Zoom setting on your display.

i had the same problem on my t.v when i bought a bluRay movie...i seen the casino royale trailer which looked amazing in full screen so i went out and bought the BluRay movie....only to find out it only uses half the screen size.

its the last movie i will be buying for a long time....i dont recall having this problem with any of my DVD movies.

It's commonplace on dvds too, i imagine your dvd player was set to cut off the sides of the image and zoom in by default, my old dvd player was but i'd rather have the whole picture and sacrifice the top and bottom of the screen.

As far as I can see from a quick search on Google there's no 1:1 mapping on the 226bw...

Looks like i'm gonna have to live with black lines :(

Just to clarify please see

http://www.dvdaust.com/aspect.htm

take note of "CINEMASCOPE - PANAVISION" and "Widescreen"

Cinemascope is the aspect ratio most movies use when shown in the cinema and most retain this aspect when transferred to DVD/Blu-ray. Widescreen is what most television shows are filmed in and most televisions use this aspect ratio. I have heard of TVs that use cinemascope ratio, but never seen one.

Yep its normal im affraid, some people swear buy the 'correct cinematic aspect ratio' sayings its as the director intended, other people like to have all of there screen used.

I can see both points of view, unless you have a HUGE TV, anything in cinemascope, doesnt look as high res because out of the 1080 (or whatever it is) lines, only half of them are being used, where as when a high def film is mastered in 16/9, it fills the whole screen and the increased clarity that HD offers so much better.

Your screen has an aspect ratio of 16:10 (because it's a computer screen). All films are recorded with an aspect ratio of 16:9, hence the black bars.

So the moral of the story is to get a HDTV :)
