Watching Blu-Rays on PS3...

Your screen has an aspect ratio of 16:10 (because it's a computer screen). All films are recorded with an aspect ratio of 16:9, hence the black bars.

So the moral of the story is to get a HDTV :)

Not really.

16:9 is pretty much inbetween 4:3 and what most films use which is 2.35:1, that's why TVs are made in 16:9 which is widescreen. Also TV programs are at most recorded in 16:9, I've yet to see one at 2.35:1.

Am i the only one that prefers viewing in 2.35:1? I find having the bars at the top and bottom give it a more cinematic feel.

That said i do view on a 50" 1080p plasma, so i dont tend to feel cheated when its not 1.85.

I don't know why they didn't make the widescreen TV spec as 2.35:1 instead of 16:9. I'd rather have vertical black bars at the side than black bars at the top. At least you will get full 1080p or whatever then.

because TVs have to watch normal TV as well as movies

and TV is quite often 4:3

god knows what TV would like like on a 2.35:1 screen !!!
