Water cistern level mark

Hi so over the years ive been needing to flash the loo twice in the mornings lol

i had nothing better to do last night but to watch utube vids on how to increase the water in the cistern.

Seemed simple enough
Flick this switch and then pull the round thing up and then turn the screw anti clockwise. Tried that but it became a fine balance as i found the cistern wouldnt even fill up.

long story short i beleive i got the water level slightly higher but noticed the cistern had a mark at 6Litres.

What is that mark actually there for?
Because i wasnt able to get the water higher than that mark slighter over only.

so i wondered whether that mark is there to basically say ‘you can do what you want but this stupid toilet aint getting more than 6 litres of water in the cistern’ kinda thing

Anyway happy fryday!

The fill valve controls how much water goes into the cistern. Unless perhaps you've got an overflow at the 6L mark which means you're stuck at 6L. How modern is the toilet, does the overflow pipe go outside, or diverts it back into the bowl?

So its about 5 years old fairly new

i think the over flow diverts back into the cistern as i couldnt see an outside pipe

but the over flow pipe is a lot higher than the 6 litre cistern mark

i will get a pic when i can

That's good, it's unlikely to be that then.

If you hold down on the fill valve to keep water running. Can you fill it upto the overflow?

are you talking about the bit where the screw is on the left hand side?

i think so yes but i found if i turn that screw too much anti clocwise, flush the toilet then it no longer fills at all

and for that clip i had to undo
I found it that was up too high
Water also would not fill

I will double check

Cowboy builders
Didnt even screw the cistern into the wall smh

anyway level is low
To be honest the water is just about the cistern level mark thats why im wondering what the purpose of that line is
Hard to see in the pic

If I recall correctly, those you don’t adjust a screw. You turn the water off and pull off a clip and move up the entire assembly.

You don’t really want it any more than 6L anyway, that’s a standard flush size for a U.K. toilet.

I think on yours it's the grey bit, it's basically a flotation part that floats on the surface of the water to cut off the fill valve when it's reached the desired height. You can push the float down to release more water though.

You might find that your fill valve is at the highest setting anyway and therefore can't add anymore water unless forced.

yep that is just it

oh well shame
At least worth asking though

There should be another clip further down to adjust the height of the whole valve assembly.
That should give you a bit more adjustment if the valve body at the top doesn't foul on that rather rusty clip.

is that on the right hand side? That bigger thing? Ok will check
Is it worth raising it though?

Ah yes, the good old "6 Litre to save water" cistern that actually uses more water than the old 9 litre cisterns because you need to flush it twice after a large dump.......
