Hi Guys!... I'm new here and I've already found this place VERY usefull!.

Anyhew, I've just bought myself a 96 P-reg 214Si (Bubble) to get me to and from work to try and save petrol over my CR-V (which its done already!!).

Yesterday I found a VERY large puddle under the car, Thinking the worst I started pannicing!... Thinking Head Gasket or summut!.. (specially after some threads I've seen here!!)

Strangly the water was coming from the back!?!.. on further investigation the water seems to be comming from the 'Front' of the Back-box on the exhaust (not the tail pipe!) I cant hear or see any blowing holes!... but thats not the problem!..

Does anyone know where its coming from or why I'm getting Loads of, clean no Oil or extras, Water coming out of my exhaust!?!...

I have noticed the Radiator Headder tank has been overfilled!... does the Expansion tank dump out somewere in the rear??...

We're gonna syphon off the extra water today and see!!!...

Does anyone know what it could be!????..

Cheers
Simon. :)

Cars used for short journeys can build up a lot of water in the exhaust silencers. Water is a by product of the combustion of petrol, but normaly it is vapourised when the exhaust system get hot enough.

However, a failing head gasket (or inlet manifold gasket on the K series - very common) can cause more water than normal to be expelled, so keep a very close eye on the coolant level i.e. check at least once a day until you are sure it doesn't move. It's a slight worry that the expansion tank has been overfilled, it could suggest that it has a history of using water. If the inlet manifold gasket is leaking, get it fixed immediately, it's one of the primary causes of the head gasket failing due to loss of coolant. A symptom of the inlet manifold gakset leaking is a misfire when you start that car that goes away after a minute or so. Also remove the spark plugs from number 1 and number 4 cylinders (i.e. the end ones) and see if the ends are slightly rust coloured.

If the head gasket and inlet manifold gast are ok, then generaly water comming from the exhaust is nothing to worry about, a few good long thrashes should clear it out.

Given that your CR-V is going to be at most a 2 litre VTEC how on earth do you expect to save money on petrol by taxing, running, buying and insuring a second car? You might think you are saving money on petrol but it'll be years before the saving pays off all the additional expense!

I think some techanical advice was asked for rather than the economics of running two cars?

There isn't a lot of useful technical advice to add given your post has pretty much covered it and explained it in reasonable detail :)

Hi mate.

It's normal for the expansion tanks water level to rise when the engine is on, unless you checked it before you started it up?

Just wanted to criticise then Huh?

There is one more thing to add. Something I noticed when my head gasket went on my 214Si, when your engine is running, if your gasket is on its way out the water level will rise quite a bit due to pressure from the engine (or something along those lines). My advie is the same as above, keep your eye on your expansion tank EVERY DAY

when the car is warm, the water level will be higher than the level its at when cold. this is because water expands when it gets hot.

Thanks guys!... Thats basicly what the guys over at the MG-Rover forums said too!... and the bloke in KwikFit (but I had to check his advice as I've been fobbed off before!!)..

I'll keep an eye on Both the Coolant and Oil!... but after a quick thrash between J16 to J17 on the M4 and back there's no more water coming out!...

It's just me panicing cos of all the HGF threads arround here and the MG-R Forums!..

The CR-V is up for sale on AutoTrader!, It's sitting in my Garage and I only run it once a week to keep the Battery fresh!.. We're gonna get a Civic once its sold and then probly sell the Rover!.. :p

So the point of posting was........?

Pretty obvious, find out how he hoped to save money by having the 200. Something which was answered quite simply by the original poster with the news he's flogging the CR-V :)

I'm always interested when people do stuff to save money because half the time they don't realise it's costing them more.

Plus it gave numerous regulars here the chance to have a dig at me, what more do you want in a thread? :)

Im finding the people who are constantley moaning @ fox worse than fox himself at the moment

He asked a rather simple question and yet got moaned at 3 times :p

I don't constantly moan. It just gets a bit boring when all you see is him belittling peoples decisions to change cars to save money without knowing the full story.'How on earth' hardly comes across as a simple question, more of a rhetorical one. Then when people have to explain (which they shouldn't) he soon back tracks. You know what they say about assumption.

The fact also that it has NOTHING to do with the actual original post.

Edit: Sorry Sam looks like I quoted you before you edited your post

Unfortunately it's just the way I type things, it just comes out like that :o

No Im not having a go at you Simon mate, just certain people keep going on at him and it gets rather boring to watch. I agree sometimes fox can slightly "take the thread of topic" BUT often he is actually correct and hes well within his rights to make the point. (All these idiots that change to a diesel just because they have "heard" its cheaper) for example

Dear oh dear :p sorry to take your thread of topic. I remember mikes MR2 had a head gasket and before that water would stream out of the Exhaust pipe

I hope it did! :p Sorry i just had to point that one out.
It was removed to reduce weight. ;)

when I first got my 214i it smoked heavily and loads of water was coming out of the back. It was only used for very short journeys and stood about most of the time.

I took it for a blast down to Soton for the mini-meet and it sorted it out nicely. :)
