Water Quality discussion thread

It’s the principle of the water going through a load of old pipes and into a glass that people don’t like the thought of. My taps spew out some right gunk unless I let them run for 30 seconds or so!

Sparkling water with a meal for me plz.

Might be something wrong with your pipes then. My water comes out perfectly clear.

In most parts of the UK I'd challenge anyone to tell the difference in a blind test between filtered straight from the tap and filtered from a jug.
Challenge accepted. The water in Hemel Hempstead is awful. I couldn't drink it unless it was passed through a Brita jug first. It's not toxic of course lol it's just not palatable (to me, so subjective).

But this is the current topic and it is important! Not quite corner-sofa important, but still important. Dude bought a water filter, other dude says you can't taste the difference, dude disagrees, debate ensues...

I'm a Brita jug user and can definitely taste the difference between my direct tap water and the filter.

I bought a Brita filter a few years ago, once the box of filters ran out I never replaced it again.

My sister who lives in Bournemouth has one and I can see why, as I brought my Anova sous vide and used it just once to cook, it came back full of limescale. I get none where I am.

For some people this is worth it, for some it's not.

I've got a water softener. Makes my water nice and clean. Our water here is ridiculously hard, with scale building up everywhere. I think it's worth the money and when we move we can take it with us, which means we will have softened water for life.

Arguably, it's not the same as filtered but I'm not bothered.

Yeh, our area is quite hard water. I have to pick the scale off the bottom of the taps every so often. It's also a visible difference when brewing a cup of tea without filtered water. Haven't really looked into buying a water softener kit but my parents have one, although I don't think they've got it hooked into their drinking water.

The amount of scum you get in your tea is disgusting. I've come to prefer the soft water tea. A water softener is bloody expensive though. The only reason why were able to afford ours is that they give you the option to split the payment over a number of months interest free. They also offered a trial, 2-3 months I think, and at the end you can choose to return the water softener. I felt that we couldn't afford it in the end and when I told them, they discounted it and split the payments over 12 months instead of 6. I'm alright with that.

Can't believe my posting of my new Virgin Pure Waterbar sparked such a heated debate and caused this spawned thread from the comments!

Just had a Virgin Pure Water T6 installed....so far I'm very impressed with it!
Hot and cold filtered water from one machine at the touch of a button!

I'm in the midlands and the Trent Water isn't too bad at all. For us it was the convenience of a chilled cold water feed, boiling water and the automated replacement filter deliveries and UV lamps that makes it worthwhile.

didn't see original posting ...
due diligence - their advertising does not say, or appear to show, what technique is used for softening the water, and how much water you can actually soften per month ? just that they change filter every 6 months ..... and strangely, they de-scale the machine every 6 months - why does it need that ?

their announced competitor says
I live in a hard water area, will this be a problem?
Our filters do not remove the minerals that cause limescale but the hot tank has been designed to keep those minerals in suspension so that the elements inside do not become furred. We offer a hot tank cleaning kit to descale your hot tank and we recommend you do this every 6 months regardless of the hardness of your water. We have actively avoided using an anti-scale “dosing” system, unlike our major competitor, because we do not believe that adding anti-scale chemicals to the water is the best option for the creation of pure water.

ime - one britta cartridge in hard water area is ~ 28days @2.5l/day = 70litres for a £4 filter.

edit: ok looks like it is a filter not softener solution
