Watercooled my 7800GT, hot memory though!

Not at all but if you were nvidia would you bother spending extra cash on a cooler that covers the memory as well if it wasnt needed? Granted it probably doesnt cost them much extra but its still money that could have gone to pure profit if it wasnt needed ;)

Nvidia showed they weren't fussed about profit when they produced the FX series, so no I think they have a very large habit of wasting money. We need to bear in mind here that this was the first implimentation of GDDR3, so they were probably overly cautios when it came to cooling (i.e better spend about 50p more on each card to avoid a possible grilling by the press) A HSF covering the whole card also looks better than a puny 9800pro style piece of lego.

You mean for ramsinks? Only thing is I'm not sure they're sufficient...

Ramsinks are unnecessary. What do you mean by "REALLY hot"? My system RAM gets so hot I can't touch it without it burning me. If it were much hotter I'd start to get worried, anything lower than that on RAM is fine. It's more likely the limit of the RAM on your card affecting the maximum speed an thus causing the corruption.

At 1200MHz the memory was so hot i wouldnt keep my finger there ;)
But with nothing actively disipating the heat away it's only going to get hotter, which i think is why it crashed. I can run several 3D mark benchmarks and play any game fine but after about an hour the corruption occurs.

My system RAM gets hot too but its never too hot to touch.

I would imagine that NVidia shipped them with coolers on the RAM so that even in very hot countries they're not going to start crashing when the RAMs being used intensively for some time.

RAM might not generate anywhere near the amount of heat your processor does, but that doesn't mean it won't get hot. If you have little or no airflow in your machine (like workshed) then the heat is not going to be dissipated and will build up. Get it hot enough and it'll start corrupting / crashing.

How do you know it's safe to run RAM as hot as you're running it Zefan? Have you found the manufacturers specs to see what temp they recommend?

I was under the impression that GDDR3 was /cool.

everyone goes on and on about this point, giving false impressions to everyone... telling people that GDDR3 is cool but its FAR from cool. infact it often needs active cooling and removing airflow (GPU heatsink+fan) and replacing it with a watercooler can really cause trouble for the now uncooled memory.

I just wish people wouldnt keep going around saying

"dont worry GDDR3 is very cool and doesnt require active cooling..."

Maybe it doesnt on there card that runs the memory at 600mhz, but when the memory is above 1000, which is often the case on all but the very bottom end of grahpics cards the memory IS ROASTING HOT and needs cooling. PERIOD. :o

Well said :) Blimey, been a while since I've posted on or around here... good to see you're still active Overlag :D

been a while ;)

i not getting upto much overclocking lately cos all my stuff dies before i get a chance too.... :p

Some things never change eh? I'm just about to embark on a new water-cooling adventure as I have a 148 Opty sitting at 2.9GHz and I'm sure it'll do more. Got a new water block for that and one for the gfx card (same as workshed's). The card is at stock at the moment, but I'm hoping the new block will allow me to push things a bit :)

Yeah definately needs cooling, me and G33K are moving on to moddin an NV-68 each to fit 7800GTs. Should allow me to get good clocks off the memory without crashing then!
