Hi Photography folk,

First of all let me just let you all know I'm not a photography enthusiast, so when it comes to camera talk I'm a complete noob. I'm off to Mexico soon on holiday with the misses and we would like to get a digital camera to snap the memories. Were planning on going on a few water based trips (Xplor Tour, Xcaret) so we are after something quite robust and waterproof, but know little about them or anyone who has ever used on.

We don't want to spend a lot on one, because the photo's will just be used for storage on the PC and she will just upload them to social media. The only one I've seen in the flesh is a Fujifilm XP60 and this seems to be on offer for £99 (in yellow only) on the massive online based retailer.

Does anyone have any recommendations or advise regarding these sorts of cameras?

Cheers

Depends on budget, but the Nikon 1 AW is the best amateur underwater camera there is an a fine camera out of the water.

Otherwise just buy a cheap P&S camera and one of the plastic waterproof bags. My mum took some great photos in Hawaii with a cheap P&S in a bag, the bags cost about 10-20 quid.

Budget around £100 mark. I'd be a bit worried about using them bags encase of water ingress and not been covered for the camera insurance wise.

I'm not impressed with the Fuji, both have had condensation problems. Cheap and these cameras don't go together.
The Panasonic ones are meant to be much better, but I donut in that price range.

I used a gopro in the maldives

And waterproof down to 197 feet

Already had the gopro so was about £25 for a waterproof case with a neoprene strap.

The Panasonic or Nikon AW110 are generally regarded as the best waterproof point and shoots. Simple and reasonable quality (as much as any other point and shoot at that price range anyway).

The AW1 is a great camera, many use it (or at least the series) as full time replacements for DSLRs, however it does take a lot of maintenence compared to point and shoots. It has several seals that need checking and an O ring that needs to be kept greased and in good condition. It's also a lot bigger and more expensive. I love mine and used put it through its paces with a week kayaking in salt water.
