Way to detect which software used to create web page ?

I've seen a few bits of software that add their tag in the meta author part, but this is mostly replaced by the user.

Is this the sort of thing you mean?

if the software you use does add anything it'll be possible to remove it with minimal amount of work. are you going to be telling someone you have done something yourself and then go and cheat? if so, this'll only end bad.

If it looks crap then it was probably Frontpage. Other than that I'm not aware of any methods of working it out if there isn't some sort of comment tag left behind.

if its something like php nuke or dreamweaver then there are signs , it would take some work to analyse a site but i think u could get a good 80% idea of what software was used to create it yea.

perhaps it would be better to say that it may be hard to tell what software was used, but it'll be easy to tell if software was used, or if a site was hand coded.

sorry for expecting the worse but i'm fairly biter about students cheating on homework. it's about that time when students are given homework (end of half term when it should have been done ages ago etc) to make a website from scratch and then they go out and cheat. I saw this at college and kids were getting a's as they wrote a good contents page whilst i got a b only because my hundreds of pages were not numbered but instead stapled into chapters and then numbered the chapters. buggers!

No, no way to detect.

The only way you will ever know is by recognising template code/automatic snippets or if they want to tell you.

This. You can usually tell if a site was made with software as the code is not nearly as clean as it would be if it were hand coded*.

ok guys - i need to use some products i guess and learn

mammalian - how does "is there any give away subtle comments in code for web pages that give away which product was sued to create them ?

become

"are you going to be telling someone you have done something yourself and then go and cheat?"

ok - i've just got your point - caught out by my own question !

but i only meant it out of curiosity not in an underhand way

once i've had a go at some software then experience will enable me to spot "things"

if i find anything exceptional i can always ask you guys

Can't say what software was used but I'd be very surprised if that was written by hand.

Edit

Sorry I misread your post, it's Monday morning and I'm pretty hung over. It seems that site just detects the web technologies used for the respective site, not the actual implementation. Like others have said software like FrontPage will usually insert something into the mark-up that makes it obvious. Depending on your motives you can just remove that or acquire FrontPage and so on then have a look at what it generates.

if you put techcrunch into builtwith (?) it comes back with quite a few clues to say it uses wordpress...however I guess that's an easy one!
