Way Too Hot?

With some coolers you don't actually want to tighten them all the way as you can damage the CPU pins just as a warning (just follow the instructions for your cooler). Have you tried a lower vcore?

Did you pick the cooler or did it come with the bundle? to me it sounds like it cannot cool your chip enough.
Which way round do you have it? (is fan pointing towards rear of case and do you have an exhaust fan in there)
Can you get a couple of pics of it as it could just be the way it's mounted, unsure how much knowledge you have so I apologize if these are nooby questions.

I would give OcUK a call and discuss it in detail, because it's likely it's something they have already come across and they may guide you though some stuff to try and sort it out, all with warranty intact too. Personally, there is a problem here and even if it's the thermal sensors misreporting, it's still something that would need it returning, at least for me.

i initially thought it could be the cooler performance but looking around, I found this which shows a 980X at 4.3ghz and vcore 1.425 idling at 33c and 90c at full load on that very cooler.

Time to call them.

I'll have to call them in the morning now. Have taken to cooler off again and tried a different method of application of the paste (as seen from someone who appeared to have the same problem as me). I've managed to get the idle down to high 40's to early 50's but as soon as run CPU StabTest after 40 seconds the temp is jumping into the 80's. Surely this isn't normal... Even on a 4.0Ghz overclocked model?

I Dont know if its the Same for sandy bridge but my i7 2600k Oc'ed to 4Ghz with STOCK Fan runs at 35ish idle and 57-60 under full load...

Not sure. It's a pre-oc'd package from Overclockers and don't want to change it to invalidate the warranty...

+1 As previously mentioned my vcore is 1.344. I'm reading on other forums and sites that 3.8 - 3.9 is being reached at 1.23. I'm not an expert but again this leads me to belive the voltage needs to be wound in.
The problem I have is that going into BIOS doesn't allow me to edit voltage which I'm guessing is locked out by OCUK so that I can't tinker with it?

This is very frustrating as I need to game...

Hi my temps on my sandybridge are between 18c and 23 on low and on high there between 22c and 26c my cores are between 18c and 24c at idle if that gives you a idea,i,m running mine on a h50 when i did prime65 for a hr the highest it went was mid 40c so i either reseat your cpu or get a better cooler cos them temps are not right.hope that helps.

they wouldn't be able to lock out the voltage, if you can get in the BIOS you press the page up and page dn key to alter it(well on mine you do)

for a comparison here is my i5 750 at 3770MHz and 1.256v, so would probly say yours is about right, mine is using the corsair h50

I've got the voltage down at 1.30 now. Still getting silly temps under prime95. Have order a H70 arriving tomorrow in the hope that'll help settle it down.

Why are you worrying? Prime95 is design to stress it beyond anything else... If you think its that bad... Send it back to OCUK under DSR.

Having not done this before and having spent a lot of money on componants, I want to make sure its right.
99 degrees C nothing to worry about even under prime?

I've got a friend who has a Core i7 920 he had clocked at 4Ghz, that went up to 100c during prime95, had no problems at all last time I spoke to him and he had it like that for at least 12 months that I know of.

They can take anything.
