Install Vista over XP to make an old computer run faster?

If you're going to reinstall you might just as well reinstall XP. Vista won't make it run faster but a reinstall of any kind will run better than a clogged up OS.

Didn't say i was going to install over xp. Im going to first see whats causing the sluggishness, if i can get that sorted then theres no real need to format and plonk vista or xp on again. For their needs it would be a bit pointless in the long run, its really just an email\typing\music file box and nothing more.

You could run an old MS XP tool called Bootvis (search for it). It will give you a visualisation of what is going on during boot time. I know that MS said that it wouldn’t speed up boot times but it can do. First do a "trace" and have a look. To optimise try running it as “Trace - Reboot - Optimize - Reboot – Trace”.
