As the topic states, I can't decide which of these 2 hard drives to chose from, so need some help:

Western Digital My Book 500GB Essential USB2.0 External Hard Drive

or

LaCie, Desktop Drive , Design by F.A Porsche, 500GB, 7200RPM, High speed USB

Thanks.

Do you have eSATA or a free internal SATA port? If so I'd look at getting one of the IcyBox caddies and plonking a 7200.10 in it.

Doing that will give you far better performance than USB2

No don't have either. I'm not worried about transfer speeds so much.

It has to be realiable and external. :)

my experiance of lacie has been great, my experiance of wd not so great..
i know what id spent my money on at the moment.

the lacie comes with free back up software wich is quite good, they dont run too hot, they take traveling quite well, its pre formatted and didnt need any drivers to be installed before i used it and ive bought lots of them for both work and home use....

the wd was noisy ( clicking and eventually got worse) hot and failed after six weeks, im still waiting for it to come back from repair nearly two weeks later.... having said that they do look better than the lacie drives.
