WD and Vista

Hi all,

I recently installed Vista on a rig using 2x Western Digital SE16 3200KS drives. The first drive (the one with the vista install) is my c: drive and works fine, the second one (d:) seems to have a few issues.

I can copy or write data to it without problems but if I try to take anything off it, it takes forever, and after a few MB I get an I/O error 8007045d.

I've googled and found a small number of people who have a similar issue with WD drives used as a secondary drive, but nobody seems to have a solution to the issue.

Any ideas? Or are WD drives just not good for Vista?

I've got two here and they run like a dream. Run a chkdsk on the 2nd drive and see if any hard drive errors are detected. You can always get it to correct them. The drive could be failing, run HD Tune and look at the 'Check the Health screen', here you will see S.M.A.R.T information which shows the condition of the hard disk.

I'll not be happy if its failing, it only arrived last friday. Will try those tools.

Brand new hard drives do get faults unfortunately. Not that many do but regardless of brand, there are a few dodgy ones about.

Well I ran WD's disc diagnostic utility. It failed after a few hours because it found too many errors to continue :-/.

RMA time I guess.
