Hi,

WD have expanded there already incredibly fast M.2 range by adding the performance black drives to it. They already had the 256GB and 512GB but now they have released the 250GB, 500GB and 1TB. The Black drives also continue with the 5 year warranty as standard.

The quick Read / Write specs:

250GB - Read 3000MB/s, Write 1600MB/s
256GB - Read 2050MB/s, Write 700MB/s
500GB - Read 3400MB/s, Write 2800MB/s
512GB - Read 2050MB/s, Write 800MB/s
1TB - Read 3400MB/s, Write 2800MB/s

The 250GB, 500GB and 1TB all have the new NAND memory allowing the faster read and write speeds compared to the 256GB and 512GB models.

Introducing the WD Black™ NVMe™ SSD: the driving force behind everything you do. Featuring the innovative Western Digital NVMe SSD storage architecture, it’s where blazing speed, top-tier performance, and Western Digital 3D NAND technology combine. That's a black PCB isn't it? Look a bit blue? Maybe it's just the pics

I think the 256GB and 512GB are blue PCB as they are the 2017 drives but the 2018 250gb, 500gb and 1TB will have black PCB.

I see white/gold :D

:D

Question: They advertise as using innovative throttling gubbins to stop thermal overheating etc.

Is this advertising gubbins, or do these drives tend in general to overheat and end up throttling themselves in standard use, and the WD are superior as they don't, or are they solving issues that don't really exist?

These can be boot drives, can't they? On an x470 MB?

M.2 drives have been known to get a lot warm and a few manufacturers have designed heat sinks for them.

I think they only throttle if the system has poor air flow and the drive hits a certain temp and under high constant use.

I think the throttling is not that common but these drives have stopped what chance it does have of throttling.

I would say it mainly a bit of marketing as no one wants a throttling data drive.

Yes they can be used as a boot drive on the x470.
